hiya hughj. Got back today having had a fab week! Erm let me think what to tell you...we didn't buy passes, the comments book in our chalet lots of people had said the entertainment wasn't up to much and was repeated every day and the swimming pool wasn't open all day just a few hrs in morn and aft and the pool was pathetically tiny. You also have to pay for golf and trampoline and cart hire even with a pass so wasn't worth it for us. And tbh we really didn't need one there is so much to do around there. We went swimming at Hendra holiday park about 20 mins away, horse riding at Reen Manor (sign opposite site) £10 each for 1/2 hr. And tip for the beach - park in Perranporth 5 mins drive, 3.50 all day at the seafront car park 4.00 at the others. Don't visit Ben's play world we went their one rainy day it was small and packed full. Cornish market adjacent- not worth it. The car boot by Morrisons not worth it really tiny. and Pickwicks cafe crap food and overpriced - go to Scoobies for fishnchips lovely and fed 4 of us for a tenner. Truro was good for shops and Newquay nice town for a walk round tho not much to buy. What else do you want to know?

hughjarssss · 16/08/2008 19:46

Anything and everything you can think of!

I'm so glad you had a great week, was the weather OK in the end? I'll bet your shattered now!

Were both swimming pools (indoor and out) tiny?
Did you feel the park was fun down?
Could you have walked to the beach or is it best to take the car?

Ummm .. can't think of anything else at the moment!

hughjarssss · 16/08/2008 19:47

run down NOT fun down!

Ha ha ! Yeah weather was good actually although we had a couple of rainy days and it was always quite windy it was a lot better than we expected. Both swimming pools were tiny yes, the passes were about £100 for 4 of us can't remember exact price but about that. Have you already brought passes, can't remember if you said? You can get a leaflet showing what you get for your passes from reception, kids things in morning from about 9 - meet characters breakfast, art and craft clubs - not really my kids sort of thing. How old are yours?
No I wouldn't say the park was run down at all it all looked fine, clean and tidy and lovely setting amongst all the sand dunes. Staff were polite and friendly. Another reason for not getting the passes to use the bar and kids clubs was that there seemed to be a lot of aherm "loud" people there, a fair amount of effing and blinding and shouting at the kids etc but no prob for us as we went off site evry day and kids played in the dunes around our chalet every eve.
You can walk to the beach it's about 10min walk down a very very steep cliff, beautiful views but you prob wont do that more than once lol ! It takes at least half hour to walk back up really kills your legs and the kids cry and moan all the way back cos it really does HURT!

dorathesnorer · 17/08/2008 12:08

Ah just looked back and seen you staying in a basic chalet do you know which bit it's in? Ours was in wheal retreat. Don't put loads on the electric as it doesn't need much - it takes £1 coins we just put in a couple at a time prob only used £5 for the week.

lubyluby · 17/08/2008 12:18

we just got back form st ives a week ago and althoguh st ives has a beach we went to perranproth a few tiems aas we find it very child friendly. it has a little inlet that all the toddlers paddle in and then the older kids can skim board there or take body boards to the sea. the lifeguards are very vigilant and patrol the beach regualrly, they also hand out wristbands for the children for you to write mobile numbers on in case they get lost.

my boys (11 and 6) loved goign off exploring the rock pools wiht dh and i stayed on the beach with dd (2) in her wetsuit padlding in the inlet and lying on the body board pretending to surf.

we even spent a couple of days on the beach when it was rianing, as the children and dh would be in the sea and i sat under the beach tent keeping dry.

in perrnaporth itself theres a great icecream parlour and lots of tourity shops for picking up cheap tatt gifts! the boys kept on at us for the whoel two weeks for lifeguard jumpers and we finally gave in and got them form a shop in perranporth called happydaze which ahd fab service and some good deigns, but i couldn't persuade them to ahve vw campervan jumpers with names they wanted the birhgt red lifeguard ones.

days spent on teh ebach were easy actually, it was only a short strollt ot eh sandwich bar or the fish and chip shop. and the sea gulls don;t attack you liek they do at st ives and newquay.

hughjarssss · 17/08/2008 15:47

Sounds Fab lubyluby! I'll make sure I find the ice cream parlour!

Dora don't know which we are staying in till we get there. Our dd is only 10 months so I don't think we'll bother with the passes either if we have to pay extra for them.

Was it easy to find the other pool you used?

We stayed at perranporth in 2000 it was a fantstic holiday our ds still tlk about it and we often look at the pics it really was a fntastic holiday -the staff were fab and accomodation excellent we all enjoyed the entertainment and it was one of our best holidys.

weve been on seberal haven hols and i really think your holiday is what you make it some of our hols have been v expensive ones lmost £1000 for a week in a caravan some v cheap and of course you encounter some probs but if you let it ruin the holidy then your wasting valuable holidaying fun -just get on nd enjoy yourself

ps have a fab time im dead envious lol

chapstickchick · 17/08/2008 15:58

having read about the passes ours are always included with the holiday price but tbh aside from the swimming pools which sound naff i dont think id bother for the entertainment at night its all geared to money money money in the kid shows - £1 for a raffle ticket to win a prize £2 for face paint £1+ for a balloon animal.

malory our ds were only 5 nd 7 i was heavily pregnant it was the ease and entertainment that ttracted us to it - nowadays i do those erly bird bookings in january lol.........i did have a dreadful sun newspaper holiday too lol

lubyluby · 17/08/2008 16:40

we are already looking at cottages near perrenporth for next year, this year we booked for a so called cotatge in a john fowler park in hayle just outside st ives but ti was hideous! we refused to stay in the acomadation and ended up at tourist information finding a cottage at short notice, so much nicer, would never do john fowler holiday again!

i haven;t stayed at haven for a while but it is close to perranproth and easily walkabale.

the ice creamparlour awas at the end of the high street closest to the co-op (which is where we parked the car for £4 a day)

st ives was beautiful but i think for holidays with children who love the sea perrenporth was better as easy access to the beach and nice waters and great surf school whcih my two ds loved.

Does anyone know if you can use a disposable BBQ outside your chalet on a haven site?

OP posts:
saggyhairyarse · 17/08/2008 19:56

We did when we were there

We bought the best pasties from a butchers on the High Street, they had lovely antipasti type things to have and stuff for the kids for lunch as well.

hughjarssss · 17/08/2008 20:11

Thats good news saggy - I can leave dp to sort that out!

Will look out for the butchers as well, pasties are a must when in Cornwall!

Yes Hendra was very easy to get to , everywhere was actually and I'm usually terrible with directions! Right by the Morrissons, Dairyland and Circus. ( Am thinking of staying at Hendra next year looked really good.) The beach was just 5 mins away to the right as you leave park - everywhere else was to left dead easy and leaflets for all these places in reception.
Will you let me know what you think of the entertainment interested to know?

hughjarssss · 18/08/2008 09:27

Yeah will do Dora

OP posts:
hughjarssss · 16/09/2008 09:17

Entertainment was poor Dora.

We watched different bits of it three/four times. It was very repetitive and mainly involved holidymakers being made to put on other holidaymakers clothes.

We were quite shocked at the hard selling that was aimed at the children.
