Bad experience on a flight- worth complaining?

I recently had a bad experience on a long-haul flight from British Airways, regarding poor customer service from a couple of the cabin stewards. After patiently putting up with the way that one steward was treating me and my elderly parents for a few hours, I raised my voice and complained to her about her level of customer service, only to then get a telling off from the cabin manager for raising my voice in the cabin- no accountability or apology for my experience at all. In fact I was even made to apologise for raising my voice, as if I was the problem. I have never had such an appalling experience on a flight before.

A quick Google search afterwards revealed that BA had recently made some policy changes as to protect their staff from customers expressing annoyance at them, so it could be that my loud complaint was ‘pounced on’ disproportionately given that the new policy had just come into force. But I am frankly appalled at the treatment I was subject to on board the flight.

I am soon taking the return flight back, and not feeling too keen about this after the poor experience I had on my outbound flight last month. I was going to complain to BA after getting back home, but it would help to know that they want to make things right before my flight home. An upgrade wouldn’t hurt either if they offer this! Has anyone had experience with something like this? Thanks!

Why on earth would they deny you water? On most aircrafts, there is a water dispenser.

This was part of our issue with BA! We flew business and about 7 hours in DH asked for some water and the air hostess was sulky and rude and not happy to get it. I can well believe they would deny water given how much effort it was for us

Have you received the customer satisfaction survey email yet? A couple of years ago my seat was stuck in the recline position the whole way from LHR to JFK. The flight attendant couldn’t fix it. It didn’t really bother me that much but I noted it on the customer satisfaction survey I received via email not long after landing.

A few days later, when DH and I arrived at JFK for our return flight home we were told we’d been upgraded to business as an apology for the broken seat on our outbound flight.

So complaining is worth a try for an upgrade however I’d be concerned about them letting you on your return flight at all if they had to give you a warning about your conduct to their staff.

Edited

I bet you didn’t shout at the staff though!

You won't get an upgrade if that's what you're hoping for. People have to pay or earn business class seats.

BA usually give avios for complaints but we have no idea what happened other than you shouting at CC for something that happened.

As someone who always pays the going rate for business, I am pleased to hear it. Often I see gold members brought up after take off and I get that but I pay around 3.5k for my seat instead of 1k so why should someone who shouts at cabin crew get rewarded? Its not peanuts, if you want peanuts value, go economy or if not, pay like the rest of us. And the last thing they would do is upgrade a rowdy passenger. Theres a reason frequent flyers get upgraded, its because they know the rules!

Yes, let's ban all sarcasm, banter humour and fun in case someone with an ism feels belittled.

A pretty poor response to a decent apology

Don't ever travel with FlyDubai then - simply getting to your destination within a few days of your expected arrival time would be considered a massive success.

Economy flyers deserve basic respect like all passengers

I'm also interested to hear exactly what they did that necessitated shouting at them on the plane.

Gottodosomething2026 · Today 15:33

I don't think shouting on a plane is ever justified. Things can be sorted out on the ground. I was once on a plane, about 5 hours into the flight when I heard shouting from about 10 rows forward. I instantly thought it was a plane hijacking. Thank god it wasn't. It's a vulnerable place to be. 30,000 ft up in a glorified tin can with no escape routes. You have no idea how much you might have impacted on those who didn't fully know what was going on.

And never depend on the runway, either down with a bang or an aborted landing. Never a dull flight! I used to go over every month for my hairdresser, omg it was crazy.

Looks like OP’s explanation as to what exactly occurred has been seriously delayed.

might help to know what was so bad about how they treated you & your parents before you raised your voice? That context might help us get a better idea of how bad it was

This.

If you're flying basic economy, look at how few cabin staff there are to look after all the passengers.

I'm a quiet, very low-demand pflyer. I rarely get much attention from cabin crew. Middle-aged women are pretty invisible. But thats not a grounds for complaint (although it's why I rarely fly BA or Qantas Economy - their service is overall not great).

Wildfairy · Today 16:05

What was the bad treatment op? You need to explain this.

OP has disappeared. I suspect the “poor service” here was not supplying as many drinks or as much food as OP thought she deserved. Economy is cheap because there is very little service included. Regardless, there is never an excuse for shouting at staff, and zero chance of BA giving a free upgrade to someone who has just done so. She’s lucky not to have been banned from the return flight.
