13 of us, including two children in car seats, and a baby in a car seat, driving up to th enorth of scotland from london.
do we hire a nine seater and take one car, or should we save rental money and take three of our own cars.
what are the pros and cons. need to decide soon as th ehire company wont book the mpv without payment

you will save rental but use 3 times as much petrol...

other factors I would consider would be how many people are happy to drive this beast (some people don't like driving big cars) - need to make sure that driving is shared.

And will you want to do things separately when you're up there? Pretty handy to have more than one car with that many people I would have thought, unless you are just going to plot up once you get to wherever you are going.

Hire charges for large vehicles are generally ridiculously out of proportion compared to small ones - eg in Spain you can hire 2 5-seaters for about £300, and one 7-seater is about £500 - is it the same here?

The advantage of a 9-seater would be that you all get a lot more space (& possibly comfort) inside but I'm not sure the cost would be worth it (and a mini-bus would prob use more fuel than 2 smaller cars)

the mpv is coming up as 534.27 for 11 days . that includes 1100 miles. thereafter 10p per mile.
we wont b e splittin gup, unless it is to do more strenuos stuff, like cycling, whislt elderly parents sit and have tea etc.
threee lots of cars means three lots of petrol, and at least six drivers. wheras with mpv and one car, means two lots of petrol, adn four drivers?
i want someone to make a decision. otherwise it will be made two days before we travel, by dh, and cost a fortune.

ok, didn't see you were taking another car as well (stupid me, obviously, it is a 9 seater and you are 13 and you are not strapping your elderly parents to the roof rack).

Can't see the point of the MPV really then, going to cost loads more isn't it?

stitch · 30/06/2008 23:59

that sit really.
i dont think it will save much on the petrol either. as will need more to move it. but sinc ei dont know much about cars, i need someone who knows aboutsuch things to make a decision. and no one seems to want to.
dh says ask df.
df says ask dbil
dbil says ask dh
and around and around it goes.
methinks, none of them know anything, and are pretending their y chromosome understands these thing by osmosis.

1100 miles won't even get you there and back I don't think? And fuel just on that mileage would be around £300 on top of the rental (at est 20mpg), then all other mileage 10p a mile rental plus fuel c 30p a mile.

Def not worth it. Stick to your cars.
