Dolgellau Area Places to Eat

We are having a week in self catering in the middle of no where near Dolgellau. We have a car and two hungry boys. Any suggestions of places to eat for lunches / dinners / ice cream or anything really? I’ve seen Dolgellau has an amazing looking bakery so imagine we will try that.

im chronically ill and so eating out is something nice to do particularly on the days I won’t be able to do much.

thanks!

The Cross Foxes is a short drive away, George III pub on the Mawddach estuary is a beautiful setting and you can walk/cycle the Mawddach trail. The Royal Ship also do good food right in the centre and same ownership as the George III. Lots of the cafes in Dolgellau are also good

Depends where abouts your staying but further afield towards Bala there's the Eagles pub in Llanuwchylln and the Plas yn Dre on Bala high street

Amazing, thank you! We are so looking forward to our stay, but it’s an area my husband only knows from childhood!

TH Roberts right in the centre of Dolgellau is a great cafe - homemade everything, and great cakes. Quite big inside so usually lots of space. If you're mainly self catering, would also recommend the butcher in town who does excellent sausages. About 30 mins drive is the Corris Craft centre which has a good cafe, and lots of kid friendly activities. I also like Machynlleth for a poke around but it's less child friendly - more shops and restaurants. Popty Yr Dref is good, and the fish and chip place which I think is called Hennigans is excellent too. Barmouth also has a good fish and chip place called The Mermaid that got a write up in the Times. Ice cream - there's a small place opposite the main car park in Dolgellau itself. I also really enjoyed a day trip to Aberdyfi (Aberdovey) which has a really cute seaside, colourful houses, and from memory, particularly good ice cream. But we were also self catering in the middle of nowhere so I may have just been so glad to see civilisation at that point that any ice cream would have been like nectar!

Sounds like we will be staying in a really ideal place for food! My childhoods were spent in Abergavenny so this is an area I’ve never ventured to. The mermaid looks brilliant from the pictures! And the craft centre will definitely get a visit.

Beddgelert is only about 13 miles down the road and is home to Glaslyn ice creams - they have won all manner of awards and I highly recommend their Halen Mon salted caramel, they also do pitsa as well but I've never had one because, well, ice cream counts as a meal if you eat enough of it! If you go there it's a nice gentle walk along the river to see Gelert's grave as well.

In fact, I'm in Llanwrst for work next week so you've made me think that I probably should stop off for some ice cream on the way!

Also if you're in Dolgellau next weekend I think their farmer's market is on the third Sunday of the month. 10am-2pm from memory and it's very good.

Ah shame, we are going first week of August. I’m hoping for castles, ice cream and gentle walks (whilst the men do long walks) and lashings of local food. Looks like it’ll work out!

the butcher sounds fab. The cottage looks pretty well equipped so I might get a decent joint and sausages and things.

That all sounds bliss and totally my kind of break too! And we are riddled with castles - absolutely riddled with them! If the chaps want a more challenging walk I recommend Cader Idris, going via the Minffordd Path... but they need to be careful when they get to Llyn Cau - which is a glacial lake - as King Arthur imprisoned the Afanc there... a creature that still swims the depths (kind of like our Nessie!) Oh you're going to have lots of fun and lots of ice cream!

FurForksSake · 13/07/2026 19:10

Oh wow! I love the sound of the creature!

Oh we have lots of fun mythology we really do - here's the potted history of the Afanc: https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofWales/The-Legend-of-the-River-Conwy-Afanc/

I'm starting a podcast in the autumn all about the legends that have shaped the landscape of Wales and the Afanc is high on my episode list... We have all sorts... you know we're the nutters who invented Mari Lwyd - because what is better at Christmas than taking a be-ribboned horse's skull around town and doing a rap battle with people for beer?! Totes normal!

Aberdyfi and Tywyn have some good places to eat...Honey Icecream factory just outside Tywyn. Tyn Yr Cornel hotel at Talyllyn good and stunning location. Railway Inn Abergynolwyn worth a pop in

Papergirl1968 · 13/07/2026 21:16

I second the honey ice cream shop just as you’re coming into Tywyn. I avoided it for years because I don’t like honey but you can’t actually taste it, it just bakes a lovely cream ice cream. They usually have original and flavours like Turkish delight, apple pie, etc with chocolate sprinkles etc.
If you like ruined castles, Castell Y Bere is in the middle of nowhere, a short but fairly steep walk from the car park and free. It’s in a stunning spot and very atmospheric.
Dolgarth Falls are beautiful and you can get there by car or train.
Walking over Barmouth bridge is also popular or you can go via train and ferry from Fairbourne or vice versa.
Llwynwril (sorry, probably not spelt right!) has yarn bombing every summer, I believe, which is worth a look.
Mach has a nice swimming pool with flumes if you have a wet day. Tywyn has a cinema.
If you head out the other day through Barmouth heading north, Harlech castle is magnificent.
I love that area.

Papergirl1968 · 13/07/2026 21:20

Apologies it’s Llwyngwril and yes the yarn bombing will be on, and it’s Dolgoch Falls not Dolgarth.

FurForksSake · 14/07/2026 19:39

I’m book marking all these places!
