FrangipaniBlue · 24/06/2026 23:12

Tenby!

Tenby. Check out Saundersfoot too. Lovely place to stay.
Folly Farm is great in that area.

I really like Tenby but find the fact you have to pay cash to use the toilet each time incredibly disappointing

Not been to Newquay in decades.

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/06/2026 02:14

Tenby. Loads to do around if the weather is rubbish. We have been in the beach in rain with DS in the water in a wetsuit. He is 22 now and Tenby is still his favourite holiday from being a kid (we've been many times)

Tenby, Cornwall is horrendous in the summer, it’s so crowded. X

HelpMeGetThrough · 25/06/2026 05:31

I wouldn’t bother with Newquay for a quiet/relaxed holiday, not a chance of that. To be honest, I wouldn’t bother with it at all, it’s a dump. I’d definitely find somewhere else.

Freshwater East is not far from Tenby and gets less crowded. Or used to, haven’t been for years to be fair. I love that part of the world Smile

Tenby every time! It’s so beautiful 😍 It’s not a surfy place like Newquay and you won’t get the big waves, but IMHO it’s much prettier and the beaches are pristine. Tenby’s kind of like the Welsh St. Ives.
Nice walks and shops and places to eat. My boys enjoyed the lifeboat station and St. Catherine’s Island which was used for filming some of Sherlock. (I’m longing to take them to Caldey Island and so far the boats and weather have not aligned. But it’s truly gorgeous.)
Also the Tudor Merchant’s house (NT). Lots of interesting places within easy reach. Folly Farm, Heatherton, St David’s, Solva.
Basically a holy grail destination for a UK family holiday with primary school aged kids.

I do love Cornwall and Watergate Bay - just up from Newquay - in particular, but for what you’re looking for, I would say Tenby will deliver better.
Have a fab time whatever you end up doing!

Oh also, top tip - Saundersfoot is cheaper and quieter and very close to Tenby. And has the most gorgeous hidden gem bistro right on the end of the harbour 🤫

jumphopskip999 · 25/06/2026 06:17

Tenby is amazing!

HoldMyWine · 25/06/2026 08:47

I found Newquay a bit tacky.
Tenby is lovely but as a few have mentioned Saundersfoot a few miles away is a bit quieter than Tenby and there are a lot of holiday lets right on the beach. Saundersfoot beach is big and safe. At Coppet Hall the next beach along you can hire paddle boards or kayaks. There are a lot of nice bars and restaurants there as well, including the Chemist where the beer garden opens onto the beach.
You can walk the coastal path to Tenby and there is a lovely walk through tunnels to Wisemans Bridge.

HoldMyWine · 25/06/2026 08:48

Oh and in the summer there is an open top shuttle bus to Tenby from Saundersfoot as well.

Tenby is one of my happy places, I completely love it there! It does get very busy in summer and they pedestrianise the main part of town over the busiest tourist time just so you are aware not to try and drive through. Try to find accommodation with parking or stay further out and walk in.
There's so much to do locally, and many, many beautiful beaches to explore! I also love Bosherston Lily Ponds and Stackpole Quay, Carew Castle, Colby Woodland Gardens is very pretty, Narberth and Saundersfoot are nice for a wander, Heatherton Sports Park for an activity day, Folly Farm for a fun kids day out. There's honestly so much in the area and Tenby itself is picture postcard pretty. I have also been to Newquay and Tenby would 100% get my vote.

The Pembrokeshire coast is beautiful, especially Barafundle Bay (National Trust).

I have cousins who live in Saundersfoot and my sister and I have rented luxury caravans at the lovely Haven site nearby at Lydstep Haven. Very well maintained and in a beautiful (seemingly private) bay. You can rent directly from Haven or privately directly from the owners which is a bit cheaper - you would need to google first and check the location of the caravan.

I have been to Newquay but sadly found it a bit chavvy.

ScoobyDoesnt · 25/06/2026 09:11

Pembrokeshire over Cornwall every time. Tenby is lovely, and loads to do around - but also recommend looking at Saundersfoot which typically is a bit less busy, but still plenty to do.

Beaches are awesome - my childhood favourites nearby are Barafundle on the Stackpole estate and West Angle, but beaches closer to Tenby are lovely too.

Pembrokeshire definitely is my happy place.
