Characterful stay near Oxford

We’re dropping my son off in Oxford mid September and are looking to stay nearby overnight. It will just be my husband and myself and I’d love something characterful and quintessentially English! Maybe somewhere we can go for a nice walk on Saturday before we see our son for breakfast on Sunday morning.

We would prefer countryside/town/village to Oxford itself.

Thanks!

Not at all what you asked for, but there's a prison in Oxford that's been converted to a hotel. It's very nice for a short stretch 😀

Oxford itself fits what you looking for

I’d stay in Oxford so you don’t have to get back in again the next day (traffic is usually dreadful) and have a walk around Christchurch Meadow, Port Meadow or along the canal.

Which side of Oxford will you be?

An option might be Woodstock, 10-15 minutes’ drive from the Peartree park and ride. It’s a very pretty town with the main entrance to the Blenheim estate inside it, the Oxfordshire Museum and some lovely shops (Loft is a fave for great clothes and home stuff). Walking in the estate is doable and there are some nice footpaths, there are some restrictions to where you can go in the estate without paying. Seeing round the house is cool but very expensive. I’m afraid I haven’t stayed anywhere in Woodstock myself though I’ve eaten at the Kings Arms which was pleasant though on a main road.

Iffley is a good option as it feels like a village but is actually pretty much in South Oxford. There are some hotels etc. Iffley lock is a great place to access the river and a nice walking option there is to walk to Sanford on Thames.

Hi again, we will have a car so can be any side! Is the traffic really that bad? Really not that keen to stay in Oxford - we stayed at the Pub at the Head of the River last time which was fine and we walked about a bit but I was a bit underwhelmed. It was pouring down though…..Maybe we missed the nice bits! I did see pictures of Woodstock somewhere and thought it looked nice. I will have a look at Iffley, thanks 🙏

There's some lush pubs in Charlbury. On the train line there too.

Crazy bear stadhampton?

You can be any side by going round the ring road, but going round the ring road in the rush hour is a pain with some really annoying pinch points, and if there’s an option to avoid that, I would. (it’s fine outside the rush hour as a rule).

More options; Wolvercote to the north; truly awful traffic through it but instant access to Portmeadow for walking. You could stay at The Trout which is a bit of a sausage factory as pubs go but is brilliantly located on the Thames Path.

Or Eynsham, out to the southwest. Another small pretty town effectively on the Thames Path, again the traffic is a pain at the wrong time.

I do really like Charlbury but it’s a bit of a way out.

There’s the Cotswolds to the West? Bourton on the Water is about 45 minutes to an hour away. That is very pretty and English.
