Thinking of moving from Germany to Bristol for a fresh start

Ramzy · Yesterday 14:43

I live in Germany, and I long for change—for a new life with different people and a different mentality.

I simply want to be able to reinvent myself—to lose myself and catch myself again.

I am 30 years old, and my hobbies are listening to and producing music.

I know that Bristol has a vibrant music scene and is full of creativity.

However, I know very little—only a little bit—about the political situation in Great Britain.

I am Moroccan, and I have lived in Germany my entire life.

I have a good sense of humor, am adaptable, and possess a wealth of life experience and expertise.

I know a lot about cars and computers.

I receive a full pension due to schizophrenia.

This pension would definitely help me financially in the UK.

I would also like to take on a small job, because I think I can manage it.

What's your opinion? Is it worth moving abroad—even if only for the experience itself?

Or should I stay in Germany instead?

What visa do you think you would be eligible for?

Hoppinggreen · Yesterday 14:49

How are you able to live here?
You will need a VISA and its not easy to get one
Worry about everything else once you have sorted that bit out.

KnickerlessParsons · Yesterday 14:52

How old are you? Is your pension enough to live on for the rest of your life? And you can't just move to the UK just because you feel like it!

I think this is probably a rage bait thread. Let’s see if the usual suspects join the conversation.

A private pension or state pension? Government benefits aren't transferable across EU states and the UK isn't EU anymore. And Bristol is very expensive.

A state pension

The UK isn’t in the EU anymore so it’s not so easy to move and live there now.

You’d probably be better off moving to another fully EU country. (Might be less racist too?)

I used to live in Bristol (over 10yrs) and was v happy to leave. I really didn’t like the place at all.

Is Great Britain so racist?

You won't get a visa to live here if that is your only income.

ilovemynails · Yesterday 15:20

Can you get a visa.
Your state pension from Germany will not transfer to the UK.
If you do get a visa and your pension comes with you why can you get a job here but not in Germany.

To clarify - is that weekly or monthly?

WeaselsRising · Yesterday 15:20

A room in an HMO in Bristol is around £1000 pm so I'm afraid your pension won't go far. What do you plan to do for work?

VividDeer · Yesterday 15:21

You can't live on that in Bristol so best forget the idea!

WallaceinAnderland · Yesterday 15:24

You can't work in Bristol without a work visa, so forget that idea too!

Can you live off that in Germany?

porridgewithsalt · Yesterday 15:30

You should stay in Germany as you won't receive your German pension in the UK and you won't be able to get a visa and financially support yourself with a "small job." I also assume you would need private medical insurance for your health condition here in the UK, which you wouldn't be able to afford. Sorry.

Well, I receive my pension, and my parents provide me with an apartment to live in—rent-free.

I can make a very good living from it

I don't think moving to the UK is realistic for you post-Brexit unfortunately. Unless you have any claim to British citizenship somehow? But I'm guessing not.

Could you plan an extended holiday here instead? Or if you're really keen to move country, which other EU country would you consider, and could you still draw your pension if you moved?

Okdokeyartichoke · Yesterday 15:40

Ok I doubt you’re serious about this, since you have no legal right to live in the UK, or work here, and would have no income or place to live.

So maybe you’re just trying to get people worked up about immigrants, or maybe you’re being sarcastic?

I could also imagine Spain or Sweden. And yes, German pensions are indeed paid out to recipients living in other EU countries—as well as in Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland.

ginasevern · Yesterday 15:43

Would your parents be happy for you to make a living from the flat? Have you discussed any of this with them? Bristol isn't much cheaper than London for anything, including rent. It will cost you £1000 a month minimum for accommodation without bills. I live in Bristol so to answer your other questions. Bristol is led by the Green party. It is a left leaning city, very diverse, vibrant and probably one of the least racist cities in the UK.

Spain or Sweden sound good, or even Ireland if you were thinking of somewhere English-speaking. I'd definitely try it for a short period first though, rather than jumping in too quickly! What languages do you speak?
