Ipswich for a weekend - recommendations

Hi, I’m after some advice about visiting Ipswich.

Taking my parents away for a weekend along with teen DC.

My mum spent some time in Ipswich when she was young and is keen to visit.

is it a nice place to visit for a weekend? Any recommendations? If we wanted to spend a day on the coast where would be nice and easy to reach by car?

Parents are elderly (early 80s) and Dad is disabled which makes it much harder to find accommodation. There will be ten of us in total - 6 adults and 4 teens.

Any recommendations or advice appreciated! Especially as we’ve left it a bit late - looking at early August.

Lots more to do in Southwold. Aldeburgh doesn't really have as many cafes etc.

If you go to either you must go to an Adnams pub and get chips. No idea what they do to them but they are the best chips I've ever had.

Thanks for the tip - we’d definitely be wanting chips!

going to call a few places tomorrow to enquire about accessible rooms.

I stayed in Ispwich once back in the early 80's. I remember it being quite pleasant, but fairly unremarkable. I wouldn't use it as my base. I remember visiting a village called Lavenham though, which was incredibly historic and pretty.

I think the Ship in Dunwich does rooms

Felixstowe is lovely - I live there. Old Felixstowe is quieter and posher, the middle bit is busy and more traditional seaside and at the other end is the docks and languard fort. It's good to watch the huge container ships from the viewpoint cafe if that's your thing. The premier inn is fully accessible and very near the sea front. Loads of nice places to eat out in felixstowe and a short drive to Ipswich. As others have said Ipswich is Ok but not really touristy. Waterfront worth a look and Christchurch park and mansion. Southwold and Aldeburgh are nice as mentioned although further from Ipswich, personally I don't get the love for Woodbridge but would make a good day trip.

Yes Bury is nicer than Ipswich but that's not where the OPs mum wants to go

I really like Felixstowe. I love watching the ships at the docks, and you can find fossil sharks teeth on the beach

Oh honestly don’t, it’s really not very nice

"There are A LOT of Polish and immigrant families in the west of town centre, for instance."

Bloody hell. And?

  1. Surely this is true of almost all towns and not actually any level problem - people live there - what are you actually trying to say?
  2. Why would any one visiting for the weekend go to largely residential areas of a small town anyway?

No it's not true of almost all town in East Anglia. This is not like Felixstowe or Dereham or Beccles or Norwich or Lynn. I dunno if Yarmouth/Lowestoft/ Thetford are similar, someone else can say.

The ethnic diversity and high non-white-English-density in the west side of Ipswich city centre probably creates a different atmosphere from what OP's mum remembers if that was where she stayed in 1968 or 1975 or 1988 etc.

That is what I'm saying.
ps: Ipswich is now a "city" not a town.

we don't know where the lady spent time, what she remembers and wants to visit again. Could be that western quarter, IP2 area, is where she wants to visit. Where I'm thinking of as the especially Polish++ area is only 7-15 minute walk from "town" hall. Which is a wonderful building, btw.

......
I enjoy walking thru the ethnic areas that side of town. People sit out on plastic chairs in front of their homes gossiping and eating pistachios and saying friendly hello as you walk past, children running feral, bins all over pavement there is nowhere else to put them, lots of shared I dunno what language, it's not tidy but it is a real and human and so very alive, a total community feel. Speaking... I dunno. Albanian or something? It may be a disappointment if OP's mum remembers a different place that she hopes to see again, though.

And there are signs about knife amnesties and too much rubbish and cars crammed in every space and run down buildings and presumably low property prices (hence my relative could afford to buy near there) and obvious signs of social stress and poverty. These things are what many people don't like.
