We are planning a trip to Belfast next week- 3 nights and are wishing to go up to Antrim for the cause way. Staying in Belfast though.
ive seen adverts for boat trips and read that’s a spectacular way to view the feature. But we’d also like to have some time wandering around it.
does anyone have advice on the best way to have the causeway experience please? Tia.

NI born and bred here! Have never heard of anyone doing a Giant’s Causeway boat tour - I can’t imagine you’d see much and the Atlantic doesn’t typically provide the nicest of sailing conditions either. With a quick Google you’ll find lots of tour/coach operators offering day trips. Alternatively, you could hire a car for better flexibility.

Thanks Blueberry! I’ve seen the boat tours on tinternet. How strange. Will look up the trips as you advise.

Causeway coaster here (although I’ve lived away for a while) and I’ve never heard of seeing it by boat… I wouldn’t have thought you’d normally be able to get close enough by boat to see the rock formations 🤔

I do know you can do boat trips around carrick-a-rede, though, which might be what you’re seeing?

We did a days coach tour from Belfast that covered the Game of Thrones locations and Giants Causeway. It was great. Has enough time at each location and the coach driver was really knowledgeable.

another local here and I too have never heard of, nor can imagine it would be a good experience, a boat tour of the causeway. You certainly can’t disembark onto the stones - it wouldn’t be safe!

Plenty of bus tours that take you up the road from Belfast and give you plenty of time to wander.

When you get to the causeway, I would recommend walking down to the stones and join one of the tours to get all the chat about the causeway - the guides are great. You can then either wander further round if you like that idea and have time, walk straight back up the hill once you’ve seen the main causeways, (steep enough - a bit of a killer on the off chance you are pushing a buggy!) or get the bus back up the hill. Can’t remember how much the bus is - it’s been a year or two since we were last there.

If you wanted to hire a car for the day, this might be cheaper than a bus tour if there are a few of you. If doing that, then my favourite way to see the causeway is to park at Dunseverick and walk round the cliff top path to the causeway. You can then walk down (very steep) steps directly to the causeway and don’t have to pay the entry fees. You don’t get the tour (although to be honest you could tag along and listen in to a tour and no-one would notice) The steps back up are a killer, but the walk to and from Dunseverick is beautiful. Totally depends on who is going though - it’s a trek, and not suitable for buggies
