Campervan in Cornwall

I’m hiring a camp an and going to go on a weeks holiday on my own in Cornwall. I’m sure I could reverse down a country lane if necessary 😆 but some roads in Cornwall are tiny and I don’t want to embarrass myself!

Does anyone any ideas of where to go that doesn’t have very small roads? Looking to move about most days and hoping to do lots of sea swimming.

First holiday on my own as my children have left home and I don’t have a partner. Scared and excited!

The attractive parts of Cornwall are simply not built for vanlifers, or (worse) motorhomers, who want to "see it, do it, tick it off their bucketlist". It is perfect for people who are responsible about driving down narrow lines with high hedges and are prepared to back up to let others past if needed, and who are respectful to the people who live and work in the area.
There are lots of beautiful places but some that are overrun by us tourists and make local people feel aggrieved.
I will never go to Lands End or St Ives in the summer months again, but I would love to go back to Mullion Cove and Lizard Point - both very quiet when other places we'd been earlier were unpleasantly heaving.
Cornwall is a place to unwind and breathe as a visitor, to explore and find your own path that might not be the one advertised. You just need to be mindful of others when you do it and chuck the bucketlist in the bin before you go.

Have you thought about going somewhere else?
I ask this as Cornwall is not known for its welcome and they actively dislike tourists, so if you did have trouble you maybe wouldn’t be in the best place??

I tend to avoid Sussex as people who live there actively dislike brunettes and throw rotten fruit at you if you break down.

P.S Your post is nuts

I think it's fairer to say that we actively dislike SOME emmets. We don't have a problem with the vast majority. Just a few with an attitude problem.

Edited

I had to look up the word Emmet, as fortunately it’s not a word that I’m familiar with.

“In the Cornish dialect, an emmet is a term used by locals to describe tourists or holidaymakers. Derived from the Old English word for "ant" ((\text{\ae}mete)), it likens visitors to insects—swarming to the beaches, milling about, and scurrying around during the summer.”

Thank you @Dearover

It’s reasonably well known. I was trying to be helpful and honestly, I don’t care either way.

But it is not just my view. And because you might disagree, calling it ‘nuts’ isn’t an informed response just because a different opinion clearly makes you feel uncomfortable.

Let’s not forget also the ‘Fuck Off and Go Home’ sign on the A24..

It is nuts to say that the Cornish actively dislike tourists though!
It is a sweeping generalisation which is untrue and unfair. Some Cornish may dislike some tourists some of the time but most are aware of the commercial benefit tourism brings to the local economy.
The signage that your referred to happened in 2022 in the pandemic as a backlash of some local communities who had been stringently following covid guidelines expanding with the influx of second home owners which brought a spike in the case of covid to the county. Similar signs were also displayed in Devon.

I agree that most are aware of the financial benefits that tourism brings. But whilst they want the money, the business, they don’t respect the tourism and money that it brings to the area.
Begrudgingly taking your money at the till.

"SOME hate tourists, presume that you are one, just want your money. It would soften the blow if these tacky tourist shops that plague beautiful Cornwall would at least pretend to have some fondness for you. But they don’t, they hate you, they just want your money. If they’re nice it’s probably insincere.

Cornwall…

And the fact that visitors are called ‘Emmets’, including on this very thread, really says it all.

Enjoy your coast and I hope you have very few ants this summer, with the audacity of bothering you with their hard earned holiday money.

What were your experiences there?

As you haven't responded to my question
@limeebergomotti
it seems safe to assume that the answer is no you haven't been to Cornwall.

You should try it you might be surprised how lovely it is.

Cornwall…

That is a very odd article. I assume she is being hyperbolic when she parked "20 miles away" as that's 5+ hours of walking. Either that or it's a typo for 20 minutes.

Half of the people in Cornwall were not born in Cornwall. When I lived in Cornwall I worked in a team of Cornish and non Cornish, was in a running club of Cornish and non Cornish, lived in a street of Cornish and non Cornish, Children attended a school of Cornish and non Cornish. I would socialise with people from all of the above both Cornish and non Cornish.

I'm sure there are people born in Cornwall that would like to wind the clock back to the 70s as there are many in England that would like to do so also. But time marches on.

The person moaning about tourists in the summer is as likely to be from London or Yorkshire as they are from Cornwall and yes they are hypocrites.

I have indeed been to Cornwall. I had a lovely time and spent lots of my hard earned London (Emmet) money.

The very term is derogatory and even on this very thread, it’s come up.

There is a reason why tourism is declining in areas in which non locals (People) are referred to as ants.

The OP was travelling on her own and I suggested maybe try somewhere else more welcoming of ‘new people/ ants).

I was advising in OP’s best interests.

if you love Cornwall then good for you. I have no argument there.
