Affordable coastal UK areas with good transport links for summer stays

Please give me your suggestions for areas that are by the coast but with good transport links/walkable towns/cities for the summer months.

We are thinking of doing some remote working and travelling round the UK a bit in air b and bs or apartments with cooking facilities.

We are looking at July, August and September

2 adults, no kids, no car, accommodation budget up to £1000 a month so really popular places probably way out of budget (like Falmouth, St Ives etc)

Would love any suggestions please open to Scotland Wales and England

Scarborough has a railway station and would be relatively less expensive. Still very busy in summer of course. Lovely walks along the cliffs. Problem is, I expect most seaside accommodation can get way more than £250 a week in peak season, but you might find a room in a house etc.

Fife! East coast of Scotland. Great beaches/bits of coast with easy transport links include:

-Tayport (frequent buses to Dundee and from there bus or train to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth or anywhere)

-St Andrews (bigger town, but more touristy/expensive because of golf, university and tourism) frequent buses to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee.

-Burntisland (huge beach and a short ride on the train to Edinburgh)

-North/South Queensferry (dramatic locations, on the firth of Forth right under the bridges, right on the coast but a very short ride to Edinburgh on the train.

£1000 per month could be a stretch though for that time of year! UK holiday rentals are insane these days (I am from the UK but live overseas, renting in the UK for more than a few days is not possible for us).

However, if you are looking on Airbnb can be worth writing directly to hosts to confirm if they are up for doing longer lets - you never know, it might be ideal for them, if they are hoping to go away themselves during the summer and don't want lots of hassle with turn-arounds. But... July and August is obviously the time that's easiest to fill for most seaside locations, so lower prices are unlikely.

Your budget is not realistic at all, it’s that a week in coastal areas generally, perhaps £500 a week if it’s not in a nice area. Where I live (beach at end of road but not a nice one, fairly connected as far a public transport is concerned) Airbnb’s run at £200+ a night in summer (nice area, not a touristy place just more a dog walking beach)

Toastforthewin · 03/05/2026 11:58

Yes I do worry about the budget fair enough point.

I can't see how you'd achieve anything like this outside of camping. But obviously, that comes with upfront costs.

Jakers, just had a quick look on Airbnb. Not much for (barely) less than £2000 /month in summer. Cheapest is Kinross, but it's not on the coast. West Wemyss looks adorable but not sure how regular the transport links are!

@Toastforthewin look at the house sitting websites, perhaps the ones to be a live in dog sitter, that’s more of a possibility

New Brighton on the Wirral? Good links to Liverpool and Chester. Relatively cheap compared to some areas.

EmbarrassmentLovesCompany · 03/05/2026 16:05

Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, North & South Shields.

Not sure your budget will stretch in summer tho.

Thanks all...

You good look at Morecambe and South Cumbria Coastline. Has the rail links but no idea of cost.

MiddleAgedDread · 04/05/2026 18:36

Ayrshire - Largs, Troon, Weymss bay, there’s trains and a decent bus service along the coast. But your budget is too low for short term rentals.

You might have better luck with static caravans rather than cottages for your budget.
