Scotland or Isle of Man for holiday with toddlers?

Please can anyone recommend an area for a June holiday with a 2 and 4 year old? Last year we went to north Wales which was lovely and now looking for something new.

We like walks and beaches (even when it is cold and rainy, which we know to expect with our choices!), little towns to get a coffee and ice cream in, maybe a few attractions like a railway, wildlife etc

I thought I had settled on Lake Lomond which looks stunning but now thinking there might not be much for them at this age and we’d get more out of it in a few years when the kids can do proper hikes and enjoy the water sports, so now wondering if there are areas that might suit us better with gentler walks and easier drives between places. Ideally lots to see within a forty minute drive of wherever we base ourselves.

We live in the north of England so can drive to the lower half of Scotland in a few hours or get to the Isle of Man ferry fairly easily so I was looking at them but would appreciate any ideas and tips!

Thanks!

100% not isle of man

Bluespottedfrog · 25/02/2026 20:32

Wondering why pp is so against the Isle of Man. Admittedly I am biased but

Downside of IOM compared to Scotland is time and cost of the ferry. Although this does make it feel like more of an adventure than driving somewhere.

You will easily be able to base yourself somewhere and have plenty of outings to the type of place you mention and more besides (Manx National Hertlitahe sites - Castles,Waterwheel etc.)within 40 mins

Assume you are looking at spring/summer time and know to avoid TT/MGP for a family holiday

Fife? Tentsmuir forest has a lovely beach. St Andrews has a botanic gardens and a castle. Could day trip to Dundee for museums (V&A, McManus, Science Museum and HMS Unicorn) plus swimming at the Olympia. There is the Fife Coastal path for walks and some of the fishing villages are definitely worth exploring. I always liked Pittenweem and Crail.

Can’t comment on those but I can recommend Northumberland or Whitby

I recommend Isle of Man! Feels different enough and great for beaches and walking and I'm sure lots for young kids though not been in a while. Avoid early June for TT and I would also personally avoid Douglas (no offence). Loch Lomond also beautiful though.

A lot of scottish beaches don't have a "resort" there as well like North Wales does, they're mostly just patches of sand!
North Berwick / Dunbar area might suit. There's sandy beaches, East Links farm park, the museum of flight, Dunbar has a leisure pool, Archerfield is nice for a potter and coffee, good beach and play area at Yellowcraigs, you could take the train into Edinburgh for the day.....
In June you're entering into midge season on the west coast of Scotland!

I have a lovely uni friend from the Isle of Man so we visited with our 2.5 year old DS and had a brilliant time. I’ve been twice now (once without kids) and always been so surprised how much I loved it.

We had local knowledge to help us but there was loads to do with young kids, especially if they’re into transport - the electric railway and the steam train were huge hits. We also did some lovely little forest walks, with little streams for Pooh sticks etc. Depending on their age the Manx museum might be fun fo a rainy day.

We stayed in a flat on the main road in Douglas and I thought the town was only ok (a bit like your standard ‘past it’s best’ seaside town) but DS loved watching the horse trams go by.

Definitely avoid TT week but otherwise it’s definitely worth a look.

The Isle of Man is great for kids. The Steam Railway, the Electric Railway, particularly the one up to the top of Snae Fell. Not to mention the Groudle Glen railway up to Sealion Rocks.

Speaking of Groudle Glen, there are lots of scenic glens to go and visit for walks. Wonderful beaches as well, Port Erin in particular.

As people have mentioned, avoid TT and Grand Prix weeks, as roads will be closed and the boat and accommodation will all be more expensive.

Placeoftides · 26/02/2026 23:34

Definitely Isle of Man. Stay in Port Erin, best beach on the island, and it's perfect for kids. Just avoid TT if you are coming in June

I'm going to have to be the MN Scottish pedant then.
It's Loch Lomond OP. We have only one lake and 31k+ lochs 😁

I spent a lot of childhood holidays in the Isle of Man and it was wonderful. Some parts are a bit tatty and run down but the beaches, countryside, laxey wheel, trams etc would definitely fit your spec. June is also midge season in Scotland.

SerpentQueen · 27/02/2026 12:29

We have family in the Isle of Man, and my kids loved visiting when they were younger. As others have said avoid TT week (thats great when theyre older). Others have mentioned the railway and electric train, some fabulous beaches. Id add the castle in Castletown, and Curraghs wildlife park. Also loads of wildlife around the coast, we've seen basking sharks many times, plus the seals and sea birds.

BratPitt · 27/02/2026 14:31

The Isle of Man would be ideal with a 2yr and 4 yr old. I agree with the previous poster's suggestion of Port Erin as a base, the beach there is perfect for little ones. Hopefully you might get lucky with the weather towards the end of June as well!

The steam railway, electric railway & horse trams are fun to use, the bus service (when they're not on strike!) is reliable to get into Douglas. Visit Castletown & Castle Rushen (and go to the Isle of Gelato overlooking the sea afterwards), The wildlife park is always a good day out. You might be able to spot some seals down at the Sound. Laxey has a nice beach and good ice cream. Silverdale Glen would be worth a visit, there's a nice playground, boats to hire and good walks along the little river with plenty to explore for the little ones.

If the weather is really bad, there is a good soft play at the Fun Barn in Onchan, or at the Villa Marina in Douglas.

I completely understand and deserve your pedantry in this case, I knew it was Loch Lomond all along and not sure why I wrote Lake Lomond! I had been staring at maps of Scottish lochs all afternoon so should have had lochs on the mind! Thanks for correcting me :)

Love the isle of man- perfect for little ones!

MaybeNotBob · 01/03/2026 12:06

I'd strongly recommend taking the Manxman to/from Heysham rather than the Manannan from Liverpool. Much more comfortable, particularly if the sea is a bit rough.
