Hi! We usually go on holiday to St Ives but would like to try some where else. we like the beaches, that’s there are lots of shops and plenty of restaurants to choose from.
we live in the Midlands and ideally would like somewhere closer.

Any recommendations?

In the North East try Tynemouth. Lovely town full of great little independent shops, cafes and bars. A brilliant market at the station every weekend. Two beautiful sandy beaches, one of them has a community sauna and there’s always a lovely friendly vibe to the place. A great seafood restaurant on one of the beaches that serves amazing food.
On the metro line so a half an hour ride into Newcastle itself which has so much to see and do.
Within easy walking distance of the North Shields fish quay - another great area for bars and restaurants and live music. Also you can walk to Whitley Bay which has a great long sandy beach, the lighthouse where you can sea seals on the rocks and fantastic rock pools for the kids.
A short drive further up the coast of Northumberland where you can visit beautiful beaches such as Bamburgh, there’s several castles to visit as well as the beautiful Holy Island and Farne Islands (you can get a boat trip out to see more seals and puffins).
Also well within a drive to inland Northumberland to visit Hadrians wall and several lovely National Trust places.

Tenby.

Newquay, Wales although it is much, much smaller.

Spidey66 · 15/02/2026 16:31

I was going to suggest Tenby as well.

Thunderdcc · 15/02/2026 16:33

Woolacombe. It has a big beach and the seagulls are almost as aggressive as the ones at St Ives - they took my ice cream, but they didn't actually bite me (unlike at St Ives) so it depends if you're looking for that physical harm element of the holiday.

Tcateh · 15/02/2026 16:36

Salcombe is beautiful but full of very entitled rude wealthy dickheads in the summer. Visit it yes, but dont spend ££££ on accommodation there.
I find it claustrophobic.
I'd spend my money in Teignmouth or Dawlish.

AnnieMay55 · 15/02/2026 16:41

Lynton and Lynmouth in North Devon are nice. You can explore Exmoor as well as other North Devon beaches.

Pixilicious1 · 15/02/2026 16:59

We had a fabulous holiday last year in an apartment at Langland Bay (Mumbles).

RosesAndHellebores · 15/02/2026 18:54

North Norfolk Coast.

RosesAndHellebores · 15/02/2026 18:56

Really interested to hear about nice places to stay near the Mumbles/Gower. We have often looked but haven't found accommodation we fancy.

sorryIdidntmeanto · 19/02/2026 17:29

Tenby, but it is much nicer. I find St Ives very built up.
Also love Beer and Shaldon in Devon, and Filey in Yorkshire. They are not quite like St Ives, but still pretty and cosy with plenty of pubs.

Teignmouth and Dawlish in Devon are lovely seaside towns.

i have a soft spot for Dawlish but St Ives it is not. Tenby is the most St Ives-y place I have been that wasnt actually St Ives.

North Norfolk Coast.

I found North Norfolk coast - near Wells next the sea - to be quite delightful. Quite a lot of it is a proper 30 minute trek to the actual sea though,

agree salcombe is a beautiful setting but I have never been anywhere so pretentious in all my life.

showmethegin · 19/02/2026 17:46

Gosh not Beer. My in-laws love it there and there’s nothing there. About 4 mediocre pubs and an ice cream shop. I love st Ives and hate Beer.

Heatedrival · 14/02/2026 16:18

West Wittering.

No shops there, and very few restaurants! Nothing like St Ives.

HairyToity · 22/02/2026 08:21

Not St Ives but we've had lovely holidays at:

North Berwick
Robins Hood Bay
Kirkcudbright
Swanage

Kirkcudbright was a short break, the rest were week holidays.

IndieRocknRoll · 22/02/2026 08:56

We’ve had lots of holidays in St Ives.
The closest vibe is definitely Tenby.
Whitby has the fishing town, cobbled streets, bars/restaurants but not as upmarket as st Ives.
We love Robin Hood’s bay - a mini version!
Fishermans cottages built on a steep cobbled hill down to the sea. Some nice cafes and restaurants, ghost walks and a little museum. The beach is great for rock pooling. The lifeboat station does beachcombing sessions for the kids.
If it rains you can catch h the bus to Whitby or Scarborough. Great little place!

Can recommend this place highly

It's not that close to Mumbles but central to lots of places and has it's own land for walks. V quiet and beautiful.

Sorry my recommendation was for the pp who liked Mumbles. I know this probably isn't what @Pixilicious1 wants !

Mumbles is lovely though

cartfred · 22/02/2026 10:36

Baffled by all the suggestions saying Mumbles is like St Ives! There’s no comparison whatsoever!! Mumbles is not the best.

Staying on Gower is lovely and popping to Mumbles maybe but staying in Mumbles was awful- speaking from experience.

We have stayed in the holiday cottages recommended by @Pepperedpickles in the one with the hot tub- lovely but not near anything and certainly not like St Ives or near a beach!
