Staying a couple of nights, towards the end of February.

Do you have any recommendations for an area to stay please.

Any hotel, bar, cafe recommendations. Things to do, that the usual tourist information may not show.

Prefer independent and more quirky areas than the usual city centres (don’t mind chain hotels), will travelling by car.

Thanks so much.

The Bristol hotel is the best I’ve stayed in there and it’s very well situated. Otherwise, the Premier Inn at Finzel’s Reach is okay.

There are some really good restaurants. If you want to splurge for a special occasion I’d highly recommend Adelina Yard for non-stuffy atmosphere and excellent tasting menus. Or check out the shipping containers - Root is good but there are others.

King street is good for pubs but gets very busy at weekends.

The Left Handed Giant is great for craft beers.

Parking is a complete nightmare in Bristol - look at parking when you book your hotel and expect to pay for the 24 hour parking.

But a great city for a break, and quite a small city centre so you’ll probably end up walking to or from any of the areas hotels are in.

Don’t miss St Nicholas market, and we love the Middle Eastern stall for lunch, mixed grilled meat or halloumi and. a mountain of fab salads.

Explore the whole harbourside / spike island area. I really like M Shed and the SS Great Britain, definitely worth going aboard!

The Christmas Steps pub is worth a visit.

GiGis Pizza Shop, vodka sauce pizza, is the go to pizza place! Fantastic pizza, cafe style rather than smart restaurant.

COR for Michelin starred or listed in funky Bedminster North St, or Little French on the edge of the Downs

Ashton Court Estate for lovely deer park walk and great views (has car park and cafe)

Walk up and climb Cabot Tower if you fancy a city park walk - also fantastic views.

And walk over the suspension bridge .

have a look at wake the tiger if you like quirky

Happystuff · 06/02/2026 10:44

Sounding great, so pleased I asked.

This is a trip tagged onto a work trip (not Bristol) so making the most of being in the area before a long drive home.

Definitely make time to see the bridge. There’s a pub at the Hotel du Vin in Clifton and you can see the bridge from their terrace too.

You’ll be able to see a couple of Banksy’s fairly quickly. Definitely worth it.

The art gallery is worth a visit.

Depending on the kind of quirky you like, I very much enjoyed a walk around the cemetery just out of town. They sometimes have events on too, if Victorian/gothic/macabre appeals.

Bath is ten minutes away and well worth a trip. You might even consider one night in Bristol and one in Bath.

twilightcafe · 06/02/2026 10:53

I visit Bristol at least once a year to meet up with friends.

We love Chido Wey and Cargo Cantina for Mexican food.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/02/2026 10:55

Agree with pp about Bath. When I was in Bristol we did a walking tour with a local friend so saw the locks/docks and ended up on Clifton suspension bridge and in Clifton where we had Pizza Express. Unsure if the lido swimming pool is heated but that was nice too.

Concorde at Bristol Aerospace is fantastic.

Happystuff · 07/02/2026 10:27

More great ideas. Just need to book a hotel!

The main shopping centre, from Cabot Circus, Harvey Nic, Broadmead, the Horsefair is not the attraction in Bristol, IMO, and Bristol isn’t great as a mainstream shopping destination. The Old Town with St Nicholas Market, Corn Exchange area, Harbourside, Spike Island and Clifton all more interesting areas to mooch around.

The Roman Baths in Bath: wonderful

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/02/2026 11:17

Yes, the shopping bit of town is pretty horrible.

I must admit that I don’t like the market either, although lots of people seem to.

LiveLuvLaugh · 08/02/2026 11:35

Premier Inn at Finzels Reach is really convenient - just a stroll over Bristol Bridge. No parking though except a multi storey 10 mins walk away.

I came here to say this!

If you're interested in any sort of church history, John Wesley's New Room has the oldest Methodist chapel in the world plus a museum about the Wesleys upstairs.

The Bristol Hotel is good and I think the Clayton Hotel is OK. Also the Artists Residence if you fancy something quirky. All are in walking distance of most things. Just don't book the Grand Hotel (it was Mercure but now Sundays) and is awful.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/02/2026 13:48

I’ve also stayed at the Harbour hotel, which is situated right by the market. It’s okay but was overpriced for what it is, I thought. The Bristol is much better imo.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 23/02/2026 19:21

Wapping Wharf is a great area for restaurants and there’s a car park just behind the M Shed nearby. We did the harbour boat tour recently which was good.
