Which area/town in Yorkshire to stay in?

Hi,

We are going to have a week after staying for a week near Ulverston, Cumbria, and we have decided on the yorkshire area, but I am looking for suggestions for which towns in yorkshire would be worth staying in or near? I do love a pretty English town! And what there would be to do for children (6 and 4) in that area?

I have been looking around Hebden Bridge. But if anyone thinks there is somewhere better/nicer, I am all ears 👂. Or would we be far better doing Whitby? Also wondering, if we do stay in the HB area, would the viking museum be worth the trip at York for young boys? And are there any must visit towns?

We are coming from Northern Ireland. The boys love a theme park, but I don't think there is anything in that area? I love antique shops and good independent shops, visiting national trust houses, nice scenic walks, rivers for paddling. I would value any input. I've been to Haworth once, I'll probably visit the bronte homeplace again.

Thank you so much!!

What time of year? I’d suggest Ilkley. River, outdoor pool, Betty’s. The stepping stones at Bolton Abbey up the road. Saltaire nearby which is amazing. Day trips to York and the Science and Media museum in Bradford which children love.

We love Ilkley! We have family in Yorkshire and visit for a summer holidays sometimes. Ilkley is one of our favourites for all the reasons listed. Saltaire and salts mill are fab. Nice antique shop in Saltaire too.

Wendsleydale is great too.

When we visit we are always prepared to drive for a day out, or use the various steam trains.

I prefer to visit York than to stay there.

York. Lots to do / see for all ages. Loads of history, roman walls to walk around and the last time I was there there were red squirrels.

Hi OP, we’re from NI and are planning Yorkshire this year as well so loving this thread Grin

Just out of interest are you flying over and hiring a car or getting the boat across?

Hebden is a day trip, not a week. I would go to York for 3 nights, then Whitby or Robin Hoods Bay for 4, both are great and beautiful. if you are loaded do 3 York, 3 Whitby or RHB then 1 at Grantley Hall in Ripon.

Loads of places to eat in York, we loved Betty’s and we did a ghost walk which the dc still talk about

Depends why you are coming to Yorkshire. If wanting to experience the dales, then no I wouldn’t do York. Hebden bridge, Haworth or Skipton would be better choices. Lots of walks right on doorstep.
However, York is a beautiful city with lots to do.

I was also going to say Ilkley. Straight down the A65, stop off at Ingleton for the caves and / or waterfall walk, then days out from Ilkley by train or car.

Forbidden corner is brilliant if you like a random very British tourist place.

Agree with most people here, York and surrounding areas has plenty to offer!

There is a website called little vikings which has lots of suggestions for family days out.

York City Centre
-National railway museum -

  • York city walls
  • York chocolate story
  • Viking Centre
  • York castle museum
  • York Minster

These are all further out but accessible from York and really good days out:

  • York Maze (summer only)
  • Williams Den - outdoor adventure play
  • Piglets adventure farm - adventure play
  • The Web adventure Park ( not a theme park but includes fairground rides)
  • Stockeld Park
  • Diggerland Yorkshire (themepark)
