Luxury family (tween) country house hotel, SE England

Hello

I have a milestone birthday coming up and would love to splurge on a luxury country house hotel to go for the weekend. It should have a pool and ideally cycling and activities of interest to our kids (13 and 12). Would love Suffolk or Norfolk, otherwise within a 2 hour drive of St Albans. Not bothered about golf or spa treatments.

Grateful for any recommendations, thanks!

…also open to luxury forest resorts. Thanks!

You could consider Wild Luxury at Thornham is a solid shout for a trip with teenagers. It’s got that off-grid, outdoorsy feel, but the safari lodges are actually really comfortable—proper beds and hot showers mean you aren't really roughing it, which usually goes down well with 12 and 13-year-olds.
Having Drove Orchards right on your doorstep is a massive plus. It’s a very laid-back spot where the kids can easily wander off on their own to grab a wood-fired pizza from the yurt or some of the best fish and chips in the area at Eric’s. It’s safe, self-contained, and gives them a bit of that independence they usually crave at that age while you explore the farm shop or smokehouse nearby.

For something active, the area is spot on for paddleboarding. You're just a short hop from Brancaster Staithe or Burnham Overy Staithe. The tidal creeks there are sheltered and much calmer than the open sea, so it’s perfect for exploring the salt marshes on a board. There are a few local outfits like North Norfolk Paddleboards that do lessons if they’re beginners, or you can just hire gear and head out.
The village itself has three really good pubs—The Lifeboat Inn, The Orange Tree, and The Chequers. They’re all within walking distance and have a great, unpretentious atmosphere. Whether you're looking for a cosy, old-school pub vibe or something a bit more modern for a family meal, you're pretty much covered. Have a brilliant time and a very happy birthday to whoever is celebrating!
