London "village" with nice hotel for a 40th birthday

Hi all,
I'm thinking of a trip to London for my 40th in February but would like to stay in one of the nice villagey areas. I'm thinking of some posh window shopping, nice cafes, perhaps a nice park or house to visit. I'm thinking maybe Hampstead, Richmond, somewhere like that? Does anyone have any ideas of where to stay? I can budget up to about £300/night. Thanks!

The Landmark at Marylebone might tick you boxes.

Marylebone would also be my choice!! Close to Regents Park, lovely shops, etc.

I came on to say exactly this. Marylebone is lovely.

The Bingham in Richmond is lovely. It's right on the river.

I stayed in a lovely if a little quirky hotel in south Ken recently, The exhibitionist. A short walk from museums, lovely shops, Kensington gardens/hyde park, Albert hall (amazing building to your even if nothing is on). Lovely restaurants and cafes a few metres away and the best gelato I’ve ever tasted. It’s well within you budget and you could afford one of their suites.

I suspect the Landmark might be over your budget so have a look at the Dorset Square Hotel which is just round the corner in a nicer location. I used to work in Marylebone and know both hotels very well. Landmark was for drinks (in the Cellar Bar) or weekend jazz brunch (in the Winter Garden), Dorset Square was for midweek lunch (in The Potting Shed) and sleep! It’s where I used to stay when I was on call for work and had to be 2 mins from my office just in case I was needed at 3 am.😳

Very good (and authentic) dim sum at Phoenix Palace nearby (I used to live in HK so know my dim sum) and excellent fish & chips at the Seashell on Lisson Grove. And of course lots of wonderful places to eat, drink and shop at around Marylebone High Street/Lane.

Thanks all! The Landmark looks lovely but blows the budget at £450/night for my dates 😰. The Dorset Square is £330/night with no brekkie so is probably still a bit pricy. I saw the Bingham River house on mrandmrssmith website and thought it looked nice. I'll take a look at South Kensington too. What about Hampstead? I quite fancy a visit to Kenwood House.

What about Shoreditch? There are some better value hotels out there. Could I build a weekend away in Shoreditch?

I would second The Bingham in Richmond. You could also look at the Harbour Hotel up on Richmond Hill, with fantastic views and next to Richmond Park. Great area for a short break.

You could but I’ve never heard Shoreditch referred to as “a nice village area”. There are lots of independents cafes, restaurants, shops etc but “nice village” it is not.

(I’m allowed to write that as I live in E1 in an area my neighbours and I jokingly refer to like dodgy estate agents as “Shoreditch Village”)

Harbour hotel Richmond.

I think Hampstead is a lovely idea - it really would give you that village feel. Kenwood House, walks on the Heath, Holly Bush pub, maybe not remarkable restaurant scene but lots of cute cafes and naice shops. I can’t think what it was called but there was certainly one hotel there last I looked. Or Primrose Hill for a similar vibe closer to central London?

HundredMilesAnHour · 11/01/2026 12:06

@Epictantrum for some reason I feel emotionally with your trip planning 😝and was thinking about it this morning (I really must get a life!) and wondered if you’d considered Blackheath / Greenwich? They fit most of your requirements but hotels will be a little bit less pricey.

Durrants Hotel in Marylebone. Boutique, off the radar, lovely tiny bar with real fire.

Try The Mitre at Hampton court - lovely and close to the station to get into central London easily

The Bingham in Richmond.
