Feb half term in the UK

I started a thread about the Lake District for Feb half term and now I'm put off by the prospect of an 8 hour drive, 7 days hiding from freezing sideways rain, and an 8 hour drive back....
So I'm looking for some other ideas
We will air BnB and will have a car
We are in East Anglia and will drive 8-9 hours max so not Scotland sadly. Although, It's could be convinced with a stay over in between but we only have just over a week (Friday to following Sunday)
We don't mind being based remotely. I would like walks and heavily nature based. The kids aged 11 & 12 would like some active days, adventure, adrenaline - ice skating, tobogganing, climbing, crazy golf, swimming pools, caves, zip wires.
The evenings we will hole up with books and games.
Thanks!

@BatsInHibernation , I know you said not Scotland but when our boys were school age we went every February half term to Avimore. It frequently snowed and they had the best time sledging, building snowmen etc. There are glorious walks, the freshest air, visits to a reindeer herd, archery, clay pigeon shooting, wildlife parks, Loch Ness monster trips, go carting. The list goes on and on and on. The first time we went I think we all left a little piece of our hearts there and then ever after we are drawn to go back to visit them. ☺️
We have just booked to go up this new year for just 5 days because that’s all the family can manage with work commitments. There will be our ‘boys’, their wives and our 6 grandchildren with us and we can’t wait.
We are in Surrey and we’ll stop in Carlisle on the way up to break the journey. Do a few more hours in the car, the rewards are so worth it.

Peak District in Derbyshire is beautiful. If the weather is truly abysmal you could drive to towns or cities at the edges perhaps?

The Isle of Wight and Hampshire coast would be a great option. Check out Calshot Activity Centre in Hampshire, it's one of the largest outdoor adventure centres in Britain. https://www.hants.gov.uk/thingstodo/calshot
Climbing, cycling, dry ski slope and a whole host of things. You could go there for a day or two and then head over to the Isle of Wight on the ferry from Southampton. https://www.visitisleofwight.co.uk/things-to-do/seasonal/spring#FebHalfTerm Has lots of stuff on over Feb half term.

Oh thank you so much @Icanthinkformyselfthanks I am always looking for somewhere that steals a little bit of my heart!
I have bits of heart in Pembrokeshire from when the children were very little, and bits in The Netherlands from the loveliest holidays there.
I am going to spend some time looking into this as a potential trip as what you have described sounds perfect.

Thank you @hourspassed I was thinking about the IoW. I'll look into the activity centre as that looks great. I'm also looking for ideas for late August so this is much appreciated x

@Icanthinkformyselfthanks did you stay in Aviemore itself? We may have missed the boat for a choice of accommodations!

New forest is great for lots of outdoorsy things. Pultons park, Moores valley country park, plenty of cycle paths everywhere, coast....
Also came on to suggest a city break in London... lots of free museums to get out of the cold.
We always do a long weekend in London in Feb half term and head to the science museum, natural history museum, marutume museum etc.

FruitWordSalad · 06/01/2026 19:02

I'd go to Lundy. Such an adventure.

We love the North Yorkshire Moors and coast. Plenty to explore in the national park and then Robin Hood Bay for fossils etc. beautiful landscapes and cosy nights!

Bristol, or rather Somerset in easy reach of Bristol but also book activities at the Mendip activity centre. Somerset has lovely walking (around cheddar is my favourite) but if weather is bad Bristol has free museums plus lots of paid for attractions.

You need Snowdonia.
So much to see and do, including the mad zip wires, bounce below, castles, day trip to Dublin, an hour to Chester zoo and the Blue Planet aquarium. It is such an exciting playground.
