Tips for stress-free family travel in the UK

I’m planning some family trips across the UK and would love to hear advice from other parents. Traveling with children can be tricky, especially keeping everyone comfortable and entertained during long journeys.
Some things I’ve tried include packing snacks and small activities, planning breaks along the route, and keeping a flexible schedule. However, I’m sure there are other tricks and tips that make travel smoother and more enjoyable for kids and adults alike.
For those who travel regularly with children, what are your best tips or routines that help make trips less stressful? Any small hacks that really work for long drives, trains, or flights within the UK?

How old are the children? Primary age need to get out and stretch their legs so weather permitting take a picnic to a park.

also involve them in the packing and planning so they don’t get too overwhelmed. You won’t regret it as they’ll become really good travellers.

Let them watch iPad and eat crisps the whole way.

If journey is going to take all day identify a pool or softplay en route for a stop. Look for one near the motorway, you don’t want to be adding in 2x20min to drive out to the stop.

Pack sick bags and travel sickness medication

Shape expectations with children who are old enough to understand - how long, where you might stop, enable walk or playful break not just go sit in a cafe/McD's, what they can do as activities in the car etc.

Hi! These are great tips already. I also find that planning transportation in advance really helps reduce stress, especially with kids. For longer trips, having a reliable taxi or car service ready can save a lot of hassle when moving between train stations, airports, or hotels. I usually check services like VelocityExecutiveCars to see options in advance, just to make sure the ride is smooth.
Also, small things like packing favorite snacks, games, or a playlist for the kids make a huge difference. Does anyone else have tips for keeping children entertained during longer car or train rides?

Get a National Trust or English Heritage membership, look what gives you the most places to visit where you are/where you go.

They have normally plenty to do, decent toilets, picnic areas and tea rooms and parking is free as well.

We use them as breaks inbetween longer trips since DD was small and always enjoyed a short break, better than service stations on the motorway.

Depending on the age - get them to understand the route, get old-fashion maps out and show them where you go, how you get there and what you look doing.

If there is any chance of car sickness, give them medication before you set off.

If you go at times when weather is not that great, look up leisure centers with pools and soft plays in advance.

Hi Henry,
Traveling with kids can be stressful, but a few strategies really help. Plan regular short breaks so everyone can stretch, pack a mix of snacks and small activities to keep kids entertained, and maintain a flexible schedule to avoid frustration. Pre-booking rides, tickets, or attractions makes the trip smoother. For UK travel, checking out Terravision deals is great they often offer discounts on buses and transfers, making journeys more affordable, convenient, and enjoyable for the whole family!

We found it best to make the journey in to a lot of little adventures.
For example Llandudno is 1hr 20ish from us but if you drive for 40 mins then call off at the roman villa, Wood land walk and water fall, ruined castle, roman road, lovely little seaside village, go to see the seals, then get to Llandudno its cheap and a much better day out as you have seen loads of stuff you would just have driven past.
Loads of stuff is often just off the route you will be travelling

Let your child do what they want, instead of what you want.

Use Google (or MN) to find places en route to stop other than motorway services. Years ago MN pointed me in the direction of Likey Hills country park as an alternative to Hopwood Services on the M42. Free, good cafe, playground, loads of running around space.

Also - if you need a meal in a hurry - look for an out of town Harvester. Once you’ve got a table, you’ve got free rein of the salad bar and bread rolls whilst waiting for your food.

When our dc were little, we did a lot of early morning or late evening travel (dm
lived 6 hours away).
