Scrolling through tik tok, every time I come across Americans abroad, it’s always them complaining about how those other countries are. How these other countries don’t have this, don’t have that.

for example. They travel to any European countries and they complain about not having AC, they complain about not getting an oversized cup of coffee with large amounts of sugar and additive, they complain about the food, having to pay to use some public toilets, they complain about people not speaking English, they complain about stores being closed on Sundays or stores not being open all day long, roads being narrow.

most Americans should grow up or stay home and go to Disney world, Vegas, LA and New York for vacation and live us alone.

imagine travelling across the ocean to other countries only to nag and complain about what other countries don’t have and the US have. If you don’t like how other countries are stay home.

It’s called rage bait. They want engagement and views.

MowingMachine · 04/12/2025 18:12

You've not met Brits abroad, then. "I want a fry up!" "Why do they speak forrin!"

medievalpenny · 04/12/2025 18:15

You know how the tiktok algorithms work, right?

Justlostmybagel · 04/12/2025 18:16

Most of the brits I've met abroad have been the same, if not worse 🤷‍♀️

lljkk · 04/12/2025 18:17

As a Yank living in UK... complaining is the national English sport from what I observe. So many threads on MN are enthusiastic whingefests. I find this baffling. Don't get me started on culture of envy and love of resentment...

LighthouseLED · 04/12/2025 18:18

I think all countries have their own twats. I haven’t noticed Americans being any worse than any other nationalities in that regard.

This, I follow a couple of Americans who visit Europe and The UK, and they love it "here" they do talk about differences but it always seems positives, definitely not whingy cry babys.

cariadlet · 04/12/2025 18:45

I find the one star TripAdvisor reviews with ridiculous complaints are often from Americans.

But I have reels pop up in my FB feed from Americans now living in the UK or who visit the UK a lot and they're very different. Either observing differences from a neutral stance or just curiosity, or being very positive about things in the UK compared with the US.

BusySittingDown · 04/12/2025 18:49

The worst people are always the English! And they always blame other countries for being rude but it's them, they're the worst ones!

Disasterclass · 04/12/2025 18:56

I don’t particularly follow these type of accounts but a few have popped up on instagram of Americans in the UK. They’re all extremely positive- trying out the slang, lists of their favourite things about our country.

presumably it depends on your algorithm to what you are seeing

Chinsupmeloves · 04/12/2025 18:57

I think many are so used to the way it is there that any other world is alien, like it is to us with the exaggerated friendliness there in retail and restaurants. I've met a lot of Americans while travelling and I do agree most of them weren't afraid of voicing their opinions when not happy. Having befriended some and travelling parts together I was a bit embarrassed sometimes.

LeonMccogh · 04/12/2025 18:57

Have you met a Brit?

LarryUnderwood · 04/12/2025 18:59

It's your algorithm. I follow a few 'American in the UK' accounts on instagram and they are all super positive, polite and respectful, and make me feel very proud of our heritage and culture because these people are so impressed with how welcomed they feel here and how beautiful they find it. Use social media to make yourself feel good not bring yourself down is my advice!

Could not agree more. But Brits tend to be more passive aggressive rather than say it straight so maybe it isn’t quite as obvious.

And don’t get me started on the inadvertent snobbery….

Having travelled all over the world and lived on these countries I can honestly tell you that is large parts of Europe Brits are considered rude, arrogant and frankly alcoholics. The most her generalisation of a poster who really doesn’t get it and has been heavily influenced by an online algorithm are astounding.

Pollqueen · 04/12/2025 19:04

My advice is to stay off Tik Tok as it highlights the inane and you should also read up on clickbait because you're falling for it

Bitzee · 04/12/2025 19:14

Sounds like rage bait to me. I lived in America for 3 years and never met anyone like that, except maybe the point about a/c but tbh even as a Brit I’d agree- mainland Europe, particularly southern Europe gets boiling hot in summer and I’d expect holiday accommodation to have a/c. But the Americans I know (colleagues, friends, chatty uber drivers etc.) were typically really excited to go Europe and threw themselves into everything with an enthusiasm I could never muster!!

Sbmpp · 04/12/2025 20:40

I’ve been on MN for just a short while and find life in the UK fascinating! I keep googling phrases and words so I can understand what’s going on. If I were able to visit I’d never say anything derogatory but I guess I’m in the minority? It seems like there is a myriad of complainers on MN who are unhappy with the current state of affairs in your country. I am not a citizen so I am not going to give my opinion as I don’t know enough about your government and it’s not my business but I’ve read so much re: you all don’t like anything about us. Sorry about the rambling. To close I just have to say I became interested in MN after reading a poster calling someone else a “cheeky cow” and I thought it was the cutest thing ever (btw, is that something really unkind?).

Tigerbalmshark · 04/12/2025 20:45

@Sbmpp no it is pretty mild, probably about the level of “asshole”.

It can be said affectionately or aggressively, and the tone used is what gives the level of rudeness.

Overtheatlantic · 04/12/2025 20:47

Calling your cat a cheeky cow is sweet, but try not to say it to your line manager or mother -in-law.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 04/12/2025 20:49

I don't watch Tiktok but in real life I have found the English to be the worst of the travel whingers by a HUGE margin.

Awwww love that.

JudgeBread · 04/12/2025 21:26

Your issue here is using Americans on tiktok as a yardstick against which to measure all Americans. Of course the most annoying gobshites are going to gravitate to that cesspool.

The Americans I've met on my travels have largely been charming, polite and excited by new cultures and experiences.

Maybe just... Put the phone down for a bit.

Coffeeishot · 05/12/2025 07:58

I agree about tik tok im sure there is some great accounts but I think a lot of it is so negative and attention seekers x 100 I deleted it isn't for me.
