DD is desperate to see a niche musical that's only on in London just before Christmas.

We usually get the train in to London, but know that they are commonly cancelled/strikes esp in peak holidays(!) and will also be mad busy when we would be going (20th-23rd Dec).

So I'm looking for a hotel that has parking (don't mind paying extra for that, obviously), that is walkable to a tube station for us to get in to the West End one day and Southwark another.

Driving down from Chester direction.

Thanks

We stayed years ago at the Ealing Premier Inn, it has a car park and not far from Ealing Broadway tube

We’ve driven into Archway from a similar location to drop student DD off into rented accommodation - was v straightforward straight down the A1. We stayed over in the Premier Inn there. Archway in general isn’t the most salubrious area but this is right by the tube and has a car park. Excellent value on a Sunday night and Archie’s just up the road is vg for breakfast

The Novotel at Hammersmith has parking. Just off the A4 from the M4, so quite easy to get to. Just around the block to Hammersmith tube, direct to the West End on the Piccadilly Line, and change at Westminster for Southwark.

Premier Inn Tottenham Hale, car park 5 minutes walk and tube even closer!

Moxy, Slough. 5 minute walk to Elizabeth’s Line at Slough station then 30 mins into Tottenham Court Road.

Personally I would still take the train, they are likely to be running ok at that time of year, it’s the between Xmas and new year bit that is awful for trains.

I’m also assuming that you’re going to the Southwark playhouse. The nearest tube station is actually elephant & castle, this on the Bakerloo or the northern line (if you are using the central branch of the northern line you’ll need to change at Kennington)

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/11/2025 06:00

Yes its the Southwark Playhouse.. Thanks for the tip.

I shall be checking these all out.

We get the train from chester and I think we have managed 1 trip in 5 that hasn't been plagued by cancellations or seat problems. We once sat on the floor on our cases all the way one trip when our train was cancelled and we were bundled on a packed train. It will cost about 160 (onc a new rail card) for the train.

One of DD’s friends is having his professional debut in that show it should be amazing.

Travelodge Acton has a car park and the tube is just across the road. It’s about 20 mins into central London.

The Hanger Lane Premier Inn has parking and is right by the central line, and easy to access from the m4/m25/north circular.

I would look at hotels walking distance from Stanmore Jubilee Line station or one of the stations along that section of the Jubilee Line.

Jubilee Line takes you direct to Bond Street and Southwalk. That makes it easier to get back to your hotel after the theatre. It intersects at Green Park where you can get the Piccadilly to Leicester Square/Covent Garden.

Stanmore is also near the M1.

The other option is Stratford. Again it’s on the Jubilee Line, you have Westfield shopping Centre for food and car parking all in one place. Stratford is a longer drive.

If Southwark then the Novotel London Bridge is lovely. Some of the areas posted here are pretty rough so I wouldn’t go for cheap for cheap sake if I were you

One of the two Wembley Premier Inns, Wembley Park for preference. Minimal driving from the A40, which is the direction you'll be coming in from Chester. Plenty of parking. Super close to the tube, an on the Metropolitan Line, which is faster (misses some stops) into central London than the other lines.

Oh excellent!

Tickets are booked and we are very much looking forward to seeing it live.

I'm clueless as to how safe/rough parts of London are on the outskirts. What's Ealing like, generally?

We often stay at the Premier Inn in Greenwich - safe area, has parking and is next to both DLR and train stations. Easy enough to get to the West End and Southwark.

Canary Wharf is another good option. You can often get hotel deals, it’s very safe and quiet at the weekend with excellent transport links (DLR, Jubilee, Elizabeth Line, Thames Clipper boat service).

Very gentrified.

Tbh I would separate your hotel and parking searches. Choose a hotel but don't go for the cheapest - there's some awful dives that are barely a step up from a hobo dosshouse that you can end up in if you go too cheap - stick to known brands. Find parking separately using justpark.com

Holiday Inn at Westfield Stratford, central line/jubilee line easy peasy into town from there.

MaybeNotBob · 06/11/2025 20:13

Also, be careful on whether you have to drive through the congestion charge zone.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/11/2025 14:55

Thanks. Good point to note.

Rickmansworth is a nice safe town to stay in. It has a Premier inn with parking and is a short walk to the Metropolitan line station

DrMadelineMaxwell · 09/11/2025 13:58

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions.

I've gone with the premier inn in Hanger Lane as it has parking, good reviews and they sent me an email offering us free breakfast too. :)
