Any cool things to do near East Grinstead?

Staying in an Airbnb in the forest for my DH’s birthday soon and just wondered if there’s anything cool or unusual to do/see near East Grinstead?
We’ve seen lots of castles, country gardens etc. this year which are nice but want to do something a bit different (they’re normally my suggestion as I like nature & countryside but starting to feel they’re not very exciting for people in their 30s!)

Planning to go to the Old Dunnings Mill for dinner for a relaxed dinner as it’s walking distance - is this pub nice? Any recommendations for lunch?

I usually just make decisions when I go somewhere but then end up at random places from Google!

If you’re staying near East Grinstead and want something a bit different than castles and gardens, the Bluebell Railway is a fun shout. It’s this cute little steam train that chugs through the countryside and has a proper old-school vibe. It’s great just to hop on and relax. If you’re into walks and nature, Weir Wood Reservoir is a nice chilled spot for some fresh air and bird spotting.

For something a bit quirky, check out the East Grinstead Museum. It’s got some wild stories like WWII plastic surgery pioneers and the Guinea Pig Club. If wine is your thing, Kingscote Vineyard nearby does tastings and walks through the vines.
As for food, the Old Dunnings Mill is good for a laid-back dinner, definitely a solid choice. For lunch, there are some cozy cafes and pubs in town that do proper tasty British grub so you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Hopefully, that gives you some fresh ideas and a break from the usual countryside spots!

You might be out of season for the Bluebell Railway.
I think East Grinstead is near the woods that inspired Winnie the Pooh.

Go to Standen. Lovely arts and crafts house.

Ashdown Forest is the name and you can park near 100 Acre Wood. This would be about 15 mins drive from East Grinstead.

You could do a walk to Pooh Bridge and also visit Hartfield which has a nice cafe/gift shop and a pub called the Bear. For better food go to the Gallipot Inn at Upper Hartfield/Gallypot Street.

Firest Row is quirky but not much there - there’s a converted railway line, the Forest Way where you can ride/walk all the way to Groombridge (12 miles or so). Groombridge has Harrison’s Rocks (for walks/climbing) and a couple of nice pubs. Also has a steam railway which would take you into Tunbridge Wells.

Bluebell railway runs all year, if a reduced service over winter with some breaks you can hop-off along the route. Standen is an arts and crafts house, Wakehurst a seed bank. Plenty of walks and outdoor activities in Ashdown Forest, Upper Hartfield for Pooh corner. Tunbridge Wells is not that far away or Lewes.

I’d go to Penshurst Place or Chiddingstone Castle from East Grinstead (I live in Tunbridge Wells). And yes, Ashdown Forest has lots of lovely walks.

Thank you for the recommendations. I went on the bluebell railway a couple of years ago and it was really pretty!

I’ve seen the church of Scientology is close by and it looks quite nice? It sounds like you can just turn up and look around the outside like a Christian church. But I’ve no interest in Scientology so wondering if it might be a weird place to visit

Tulley’s Farm nearby has very good escape rooms and does a scary Halloween event if that is your sort of thing. I’ve done some of the escape rooms and they are excellent.

Ouse Valley Viaduct is somewhere I’ve been meaning to go, it’s about 20 min drive from EG

Weir Wood reservoir is close by with a good cafe. They run watersports in the summer but not sure about now, and in any case you would need the gear. Ashdown Forest visitor centre has interesting exhibits on the history and ecology of the forest, with some good circular walk leaflets. There are two main historic religious sites. Saint Hill Manor (Scientology) with free access to the gardens but paid access to the house. It's remarkable in an ugly sort of way 😁 And the Mormon temple at Newchapel near Lingfield which is spectacular from the outside, especially lit up at night, but I don't think you can go in and it's on a busy road junction so difficult to stop.

And if you are there on 18th October it's the traditional Sussex Bonfire torchlit parade through EG High Street and fireworks at East Court.
