Travelling Solo for a Course - Hotel or Airbnb?

squimp · 06/10/2025 14:15

I need to travel solo for a week to attend a course. I will be at the course 9am - 5pm.

I have two options of accommodation. Option 1: A two bedroom house in town, it's a bit dated and has mixed reviews, but has a good kitchen, separate living room.
Option 2: A single room in a pub with breakfast included. No separate living space or kitchen so would need to eat out.

What would you go for ?

For a week I definitely choose option 1. It's nice to have a bit of space.

OldieButBaddie · 06/10/2025 14:19

Same, when I travel for work for a week I always rent a flat so I can cook/relax

Toobloomeasy · 06/10/2025 14:21

If you do air BnB will you be able to claim for the food that would have been provided by alternative? Presuming you’re expensing?

squimp · 06/10/2025 14:24

No not expensing - it's a language course. Just something I am interested in.

Airbnb is a fair bit more expensive than the hotel/pub room, but then I could get food from the supermarket.

1, you can then do a mix of eating out and using the kitchen, plus somewhere to chill. You could always go out for breakfast as well as evening meal, assuming expenses allow that.

EerieDecorations · 06/10/2025 14:29

Ah no expenses. When you say a week, how many nights? If it's Mon-Fri and just 4 nights I might be tempted with pub if the room is reasonably pleasant and there are other eating out options. You could always take a picnic/takeaway to your room and watch TV.

ThisGreatHelper · 06/10/2025 14:31

I’d probably go with the pub room. Since you’ll be busy most of the day, having breakfast included and not worrying about cooking or cleaning could save you time and stress. The separate living space and kitchen in the house sound nice, but if you’re only there to sleep and relax for a few hours, it might not make much difference. Plus, staying at the pub could be a bit safer and more social if you’re solo.

NoctuaAthene · 06/10/2025 14:31

Yes for preference I'd always do an AirBnB/rental as it's nice to have the space in the evenings rather than being cramped into one room plus eating out every evening for a week would be way too expensive and also unhealthy, unless the pub happens to do very cheap and good food as well - I'm not a big breakfast eater so the pub breakfast would be wasted on me, and would be nice to have a fridge and cooker so as to be able to do slightly nicer packed lunches as well. How much more expensive is the AirBnB, will the savings on food be enough to offset the price difference?

Toobloomeasy · 06/10/2025 14:32

Def the air BnB

and why not just get a cheaper one?!

Toobloomeasy · 06/10/2025 14:33

You don’t need a two bed house!

Why not just get a one bed flat? That would save you

OnceLostForMillennia · 06/10/2025 14:36

I do something similar a lot and I always prefer the air bnb option - as with the room above the pub you either have to eat out every night or have takeaway sitting on the bed which is ok for 1 or 2 nights but for 5 I wouldn’t like it. Also with air bnb you can make tea, keep drinks cold with fridge etc. I always feel more relaxed at the end of it it all.

squimp · 06/10/2025 14:56

There's very limited availability of accommodation. The two bed is literally the smallest rental available.

Option 2. Bit of life, I'd feel safer I think.

Will you have a vehicle?

Toobloomeasy · 06/10/2025 15:00

Given it’s out of season and for a week, worth messaging the owner to see if discount

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 06/10/2025 17:58

What is mixed about the reviews at the Airbnb place?
Have you looked at other sites to rent the property? You might find it cheaper through another site, or even direct.

Ellmau · 06/10/2025 23:14

The house. I'd prefer a proper hotel, but not a pub.

Arlanymor · 06/10/2025 23:19

I'm not sure I would be keen on somewhere with mixed reviews - just how mixed are they? I would go for option two, because if you're out from 9am - 5pm then presumably you would have lunch out anyway, you wouldn't be going back to your accommodation to make food. So breakfast is included at the pub, then you'll have a sandwich for lunch, and you only have to find food in the evening.

SkaneTos · 06/10/2025 23:32

Option 2. Nice to have breakfast included. And I love to eat in pubs and restaurants when I'm away from home.

I think it’s a personal choice, I’d decide whether or not I want to cook.

LittleEmily · 19/03/2026 03:55

Pub room may be a great choice!

hahabahbag · 19/03/2026 07:11

Pub with breakfast, if there’s a proper hotel with pool even better. The luxury of food being taken care of wins it for me every time

fartoomuchtoblerone · 19/03/2026 07:15

I’d always go hotel when travelling solo. It worries me that anyone could have the key to an air bnb.
