Where to stop close to Sheffield before we can check into hotel?

I'd love some advice from anyone familiar with Sheffield please!

I'm driving from Devon to Sheffield this weekend. Driving up on Saturday, but don't want to get to the hotel until at least 4-5pm because of parking restrictions (hoping to just pay for 24 hours)

I realise we may get stuck on the motorway and not arrive till midnight...but if all goes to plan, where's good and not too stressful traffic wise to kill a bit of time in the afternoon? Retail park/pub with large car park/nice service station on the south or east side of Sheffield ideally.

I'm shitting myself about the drive tbh so want to feel prepared somehow! Google isn't helping.

My (old) car died last week, so we've got another (old banger) - this will be my first long drive in it. I don't trust cars, had a bad run of unexpected bills lately and am very skint and just worried about not getting there at all/losing the hotel ££/etc. Plus got to take exh with us (thankfully he's staying elsewhere) and he can't share the driving - well, he drives like a twat so I've said no!

Thanks in advance 🤗

I mean - Meadowhall? Huge shopping centre on NE side of Sheffield. Might be too far the wrong way tho.

Or else you could go to Chatsworth or Haddon Hall, or explore Buxton or Bakewell? These are all to the west of Sheffield but that makes more sense from Devon I would think?

Samesame47 · 02/10/2025 16:06

You could go to Meadowhall large indoor shopping complex with restaurants / cinemas etc free parking and probably about 15 mins from city centre

itsgettingweird · 02/10/2025 16:07

Meadowhall was also my suggestion.

there is also a big science centre near there (can’t remember the name) but it’s really good.

EmeraldDreams73 · 02/10/2025 16:08

Thanks both. I looked on the map and Meadowhall looked quite far from the centre but that's probably me just overthinking! I'll have another look, dd would love it that's for sure :)

It’s called Magma science and adventure centre.

Meadowhall about 15 minutes drive from the centre (well from ponds forge which is where I go to in Sheffield)

seaduck · 02/10/2025 16:10

Theres rother valley park for a walk with lake, cafe etc. It's near crystal peaks which is a big retail park with a little indoor shopping centre on the south side of Sheffield not far from the M1. Meadowhall as well obviously.

clary · 02/10/2025 16:11

Meadowhall is a short ish drive to Sheffield city centre. I mean you can’t walk there but surely you will be driving? It’s easy to get to, J34 of the M1.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/10/2025 16:11

Wentworth Garden Centre is NE. Lots for children to do, farm, swings etc. Nice food, great shop. Can get busy though.

EmeraldDreams73 · 02/10/2025 16:13

Thanks so much everyone. Currently googling all these! :)

It is probably about the same journey time to carry on to Meadowhall on the M1 as it is to come off early and get into the city centre.

wizzler · 02/10/2025 16:35

You’ll be driving up the M1. There is a retail outlet just before Junction 28 .. McArthur Glen I think it’s called. Loads of parking, nice shops and places to eat / get coffee.
alternatively come off at junction 29 and visit Hardwick Hall. From there you could drive into Sheffield city centre without going back on the M1. There will be some traffic when you get within 3 miles of the centre but not much before then and it’s not a complicated route

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/10/2025 16:42

Meadowhall is usually rammed on Saturday afternoon.

clary · 02/10/2025 16:51

Need to check opening times if some of these places btw. Chatsworth and Hardwick Hall for example. NT places only open certain days in winter.

Mcarthur Glen is a shout, but maybe 30- 45 mins drive from central Sheffield (depending where obvs)

Angrymum22 · 02/10/2025 17:07

To the South East of Sheffield are a cluster of lovely villages. Bawtry ( near Doncaster airport) has great little high st with easy parking. Several cafes and some nice independent shops. The main hotel is were a lot of the singers who perform at Sheffield Arena stay because it’s low key and out of the way. Tickhill is the next village.
The Yorkshire Wildlife Park is close by and if the weather is good worth a visit. Clumber Park is just off the M1 south of Sheffield and north of Sheffield is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/10/2025 17:10

Chatsworth is always open.

MagpiePi · 02/10/2025 17:56

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/10/2025 17:10

Chatsworth is always open.

It costs a fortune to go to Chatsworth! . It’s £18 just to visit the gardens and £7.50 for parking.

Geneticsbunny · 02/10/2025 18:11

Do you have kids? I would come in via Chesterfield and go to graves park. There is a cafe and a farm there and a nice playground.

I know! I never go anymore. It’s outrageous! When did it go up to £7.50 for parking?!

It used to be £5.00

If you go to Graves Park l think the cafe is closed.

All those places are really nice but not always easy to park though and expensive at Chatsworth.

Graves Park just to the South of the city is very nice if you want fresh air and to stretch your legs. There are a couple of free car parks and on-street parking The Rose Garden cafe in the Park is nice although currently held up by scaffolding. If you want shops and restaurants then Meadowhall, as mentioned above, is just up the M1.

The cafe is now open but has scaffolding on the outside.

Maybe Meadowhell (not a typo) would be the best place with a teenager then although I can't stand the place.

LikeMindedLady · 02/10/2025 18:26

I used to have to go to the dental hospital in Sheffield. You can park for on the street along Riverdale Road/ Park Avenue just north of Endcliffe Park. You can walk for miles along the footpath that follows the brook through the park and there are several play areas for kids in the park and a cafe and loos. Just outside the park, Caffe Tucci on Surrey St is lovely, try the pistachio latte 😍 The botanical gardens are a wet weather option not too far away, quite small but you can kill an hour there if you like plants.

clary · 02/10/2025 18:26

Ah sorry @EmeraldDreams73 if youngest dc is 18 then stately homes and cute towns may be no good. Tbh rammed or not I think meadowhall is your best bet. Why does I matter how far it is from central Sheffield tho?
