Holiday, lots of small attractions

Looking for ideas for a holiday in early July.
Not a city or over crowded as DD (21) doesn't do crowds and gets very stressed.
Hopefully as we will still be in term time that should be OK.

We like Jersey but have done that to death. So somewhere like Jersey with a good variety of places to visit, animal parks, small museums, a castle or historic house, gardens, cafes, pubs to eat in. Ideally by the sea somewhere but not essential.

We live new the New Forest, so not that. Probably not Cornwall/Devon.

Any great suggestions?

no sea but the peak district would probably meet your other requirements.
Northumberland is good for castles and has some stunning coastline but you might not want to travel that far?

The Cotswolds

Canterbury? Easy for coast and although technically a city it’s not big and has lots of the kind of things you mention close by . Same with Folkstone

Isle of Wight?

You could go to Brittany in France just near Jersey. It is not an island also you have a lot things to do. I am French and I know a lot this place. Saint Malo and the coast is beautiful, great beaches, surf and sailing, spa, good restaurants, campsite or houses to rent.

Another vote for Isle of Wight. Book the ferry early as it can get expensive and try a random weekday for cheaper fares, eg Tuesday or Weds. So much to see and do there

Suffolk.
Coast, great towns and seaside places (Southwold, Aldeburgh etc), vintage sellers, pubs, Sutton Hoo, foot ferries, flat enough to cycle, Snape Maltings (vintage and small music venue).

North Norfolk?
NT houses: Felbrigg and Blickling, also Holkham Hall
History: Binham Priory, Baconsthorpe Castle
Animals: Amazonia at Cromer, take a ferry to see the seals from Morston
Steam Railways: Sheringham to Holt, Wells to Walsingham
Museum: v small museum in Cromer with mammoth fossils. Mussleburgh Tank Museum
Lots of types of walks, wide open beaches , dunes and pinewoods at Holkham and Wells, cliff top walks Sheringham to Weybourne, walks across Salthouse Heath, walks along marsh banks with fantastic birdwatching at Blakeney, Cley, Salthouse.
Lovely villages with cafes etc

Pembrokeshire. Lots of castles, lovely beaches, coastal path, st Davids cathedral

Definitely the Isle of Wight. We didn’t do it all but we took our GD and went to an alpaca farm and a pig farm and visited a donkey sanctuary. There is Alum Bay where you can walk down or get the cable car and fill glass models with coloured sand. There is Osborne House and Carisbroke Castle and a steam train. The circus, which is on the island every summer is excellent.

I know you said not Devon and Cornwall but Falmouth and Dartmouth came to mind.

Waitingforsummer75 · 01/10/2025 21:59

Absolutely the Isle of Wight. So much to see and do, I've been so many times and still discovering new things. It doesn't feel overcrowded even in the main holiday season

Thank you all, lots to think about.
I particularly like the Peak District suggestion but some of the others appeal too.

IoW is a bit close to home really and we have 'done' St Malo area before, and DD would prefer no ferry/flights.

I think I need to get some maps out!

Loads to see in the Lake District.
