Staycation in East Anglia - where to visit?

I’ve got a week off. Unfortunately, my plans to go away have been altered as I have to take a relative to a dental extraction on Tuesday and my daughter has a trip I need to drop her off for early on Weds (usually the relative needing the help would cover it).

Does anyone have any ideas of some nice days out that I may not have considered in the Norfolk/Suffolk region. Ideally dog friendly ideas as I wanted to go just me and the dog for a few days. I’m not on any other constraints outside of Tues and Weds and can be out as long as I want.

Holkham Beach?
Sandringham Estate?
Diss is nice for a wander.

Southwold: Park in Southwold. Then follow the paths down thru Walberswick marshes & use the ferry rowboat on return. Chips in Sole Bay company / Little Chip Shop (Southwold) are terrific yummy.

People watching in Yarmouth... can't be beat, lol. Yarmouth beaches are very nice.

So many National Trust properties... spoilt for choice.

ps: Ely or Cambridge?

Bryonyberries · 18/09/2025 20:23

Thank you - I’m familiar with Cambridge/Newmarket/Bury St Edmund’s but not so much the Norfolk coastal areas so may have an explore that way. Haven’t been to Diss so could be somewhere new.

I have NT and EH so they are all possible options for places if dogs are welcome.

I love Sheringham. I spend most of my time there sitting on the seafront. Most of the many people passing are walking their dogs, so it must be a dog friendly area.

Sheringham reminds me of smaller English seaside towns in the 60’s, lovely gentle places to be before cheap holidays took away most of their visitors.

There’s a NT property nearby.

Suffolk:

Lavenham is gorgeous!
Hadleigh very cute
Bury St Edmunds also a lovely town and quite dog friendly

Highly recommend Flatford National Trust for dog walking!

I too love Hadleigh, Lavenham and Flatford Mill/ Dedham area. So beautiful. Sometimes walk from there to Manningtree and Mistley, some beautiful walks around there. All very dog friendly.

Depending where/when you do, there are various markets to visit if it coincides with a visit.

This thread is making me want to explore that area.

Bryonyberries · 19/09/2025 17:09

Thank you, I haven’t been to a few of those places so I am working out an itinerary based around some of those ideas. Most places are within about an hour and half of me so should be nice day trips.

I grew up in Newmarket and went to school in Southwold.
I love Southwold, but Dunwich ( the city that fell into the sea) as great walks too.
North Norfolk I love walking at Burnham Overy staithe and Cley. Burnham market has some nice shops and the Hoste Arms allows dogs.
