York with DDs (3 yo and a 10 month old)

I've been going to York for ever (my sister lives there and has done for the past 30 odd years). Never been for a prolonged stay with my LOs though.

Previous vists - pre kids - have been lovely: lots of wandering about, sitting in pubs/cafes etc. NOT to sort of thing we do anymore.

Any suggestions from residents with similar aged DDs?

Thanks PD. Anything in the city you can recommend? DD1 loves swimming, soft play etc.

Really good of you to provide all the links too. Much appreciated.

Thanks you so much PD!

My BIL is a lecturer at the Uni so I'm familiar with the ravening ducks but I'd forgotten all about how good it is with LOs (my niece is now 26 or something). I think my nephew used to life guard at Waterworld so we'll be checking that out too as DD1 is half dolphin.

Everything you've suggested looks fab. We're so grateful fo all of your help. If you need tips on Edinburgh we owe you several.

Cheers

sorry to gate crash we are planning to move to york this year and coming up in august to check it out properly.
My mum is having kids she has a caravan at acaster malbis,
Can you recommend any nice but reasonably priced hotels for myself and dh to stay in.
Also what area would you recommend to live in,
have young kids so a good primary school is a must.
What areas are bad?

I live in Hull and haven't heard of half of the places PeterDuck mentioned which sound fab. Although I am thoroughly sick of the deep having had a season pass for years, it is great for kids. I also think the York Maze sounds v.good, we're planning to go this year.

There is also the Castle Museum which is great for a rainy/slower day but you can't take a pushchair, you need a back carrier etc for that. Your 3 year old will really like it! The Museum Gardens, which are v.near the city centre, are lovely to while away a few hours feeding the ducks, having an ice cream etc. We often nip to the nearby Pizza Express, I'm sure we did this when our two were same ages as yours are now. Absolutely second the NRM, and the land train you can get into/from the city centre has always been a big hit with ds1!

cheers peterduck we will prob stay for about 5 days so a cottage is good idea, not too bothered about stopping in the city as need to explore surrounding villages and we will have a car,
We are thinking fulford or bishopthorpe or maybe elvington as want to be in fulford school catchment but as i am only doing internet research its hard to know until i actually see these places!!

Agree with the Maize mazes. The one we went to had a petting corner, lots of garden games (ie swing ball, giant connect 4) also some carts, lovely for a young family and older children.
We had a lovely afternoon there. It was at Easingwoldewhich is in between Thirsk and York.

Oooh, well I'm definitely going to the Maze then when it opens, we missed it last year! We went to Cruckley Farm yesterday, which is near Beeford so not too far from York & it was really great, loads of space, ride-on tractors and enough baby animals to keep my boys happy! Would love to live in York, dp & I both think it's fab but his businesses & my family here so probably not.
