This year we went to the Highlands for a week in April and then to Yorkshire for a week later on in the year. Both holidays were so relaxing, we done a lot of sightseeing and had a great time.

My thoughts are now turning to a holiday next year but stumped where we could go. Can any of you wise people recommend anywhere in the UK?

I'm following for recommendations.

Stay in or near Hexham and explore Hadrian’s Wall? It’s a while since I did it but my goodness we had a great time. I particularly enjoyed Vindolanda.

The north Welsh coast is wonderful. I recently stayed in Conwy and visited the castle, the other historic sites, and walked around there including Llandudno.

ShrubRose · 09/09/2025 22:35

If you liked the Highlands and Yorkshire, you could think about Northumberland. Lots of scenery and sightseeing to enjoy.

Justanotherdramalama · 09/09/2025 23:04

Thanks all, will have a look into those places and what's to visit there etc. Dh looking at Devon/Cornwall just now but I've heard those places aren't what they used to be so unsure.

Northumberland
lake district
somewhere else in the highlands (it’s a big place!)
Arran and Ayrshire coast
north wales

Ddakji · 10/09/2025 08:36

Are you not British? This is a very odd thread.

Anyway - we go to Devon and Cornwall a lot. South is quieter than north.

Lake District, Peak District, Northumberland, Pembrokeshire, north Norfolk, Kent, Dorset… there are lots of places to go on holiday in the UK!

LikeNightAndDay · 10/09/2025 10:55

Pembrokeshire, Lake District, Welsh coast

DisplayPurposesOnly · 10/09/2025 11:10

Canal boat. Norfolk broads.

Exmoor.

Cornwall, Devon, Dorset are popular for a reason. If you can avoid school holidays you'll be fine.

Shropshire is a hidden gem.
North Wales is fantastic, compact loads to see and do, drive 30 minutes down the road and it can be different
Conwy is a walled Medieval town, nice
llandudno is a nice well kept victorian sea side resort
Angel Bay is a nice 15 minute walk to a secluded Bay that seals are sunbathing on
Llyn Peninsular for relaxing
Criccieth
llanbedrog
Abersoch
A little further south
Harlech
Barmouth Bucket and spade with a very nice beach
Aberaeron
New Quay ( Wales not Cornwall)
Aberporth
Now thats just the coast, lots more inland.
Some nice water falls on route
Devils Bridge
Aber Falls
Pistyll Rhaeadr
Dyserth small but nice to walk in the woods to brake a journey up.
Llangollen nice small town

Dh and the kids have said they would like to go back to the Highlands again for start of the year and think they are leaning towards Cornwall for next September. Looking to book in the next few weeks so plenty of time for us to look at all your fab suggestions above.

Where did you go in the highlands last time?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 10/09/2025 20:38

If you are looking at Cornwall, I like Falmouth as a base.

Agree with Funf about all the gorgeous places in North Wales. I would also recommend Tenby (south west wales) which is new to us the last two years after so many stays in North / central wales.

We stayed in the central Highlands in a village called Kingussie, think we are going to book the same house again.

I stayed near Bakewell a few years ago. It was lovely. (And Bakewell Pudding is AMAZING and nothing like Bakewell tart)). I generally follow my stomach! 🤣

dizzydizzydizzy · 11/09/2025 02:04

The New Forest is lovely too.

I am heading back south after a holiday including Matlock - Mills and lead mines, Wakefield and Edinburgh- art and more mines and Newcastle - mines, art, Hadrians Wall. I stayed up this way in April and did most of the Wall then. I've also been to the sea a couple of times, weather permitting <looks out from service station window at current torrents...>

I think it depends what you like doing- walking, spa, museums, art galleries, theme parks (a colleague has covered a lot of the UK via roller coasters), whatever else. Some people would hate the week I've just had,but it was just right for me.

Justanotherdramalama · 11/09/2025 21:40

@EBearhug sounds like you've had a good holiday. We like going new places, seeing historical things and learning about the area and its history, trying local foods, walking, being outside and love mooching around villages with little independent shops.

EBearhug · 12/09/2025 12:28

Pretty much anywhere in the UK will have history, local food, etc. I'd probably aim at a town rather than a city, but otherwise, you could pretty much stock a pin in the map, and unless you have a gut reaction of "no way" it will probably have all that stuff.

Sounds like you had two lovely breaks this year! If you enjoyed the Highlands and Yorkshire, you might like trying somewhere with a similar mix of scenery and things to explore. A few ideas:

  • Lake District – stunning walks, lakeside towns, and great food spots.
  • Northumberland – quieter than Yorkshire but with gorgeous coastline, castles, and wide open spaces.
  • Cornwall or Devon – if you fancy more of a coastal vibe with plenty of charming villages and beaches.
  • Peak District – good balance of hills, pretty villages, and easy access if you don’t want to travel too far.
All are great for a relaxing week with plenty of sightseeing!
Justanotherdramalama · 16/09/2025 15:11

Fab suggestions @hatifhafi3 we are still looking, will add your suggestions into the pot. I've seen a couple of nice holiday homes in Cornwall but the reviews on the lack of parking put me off.
