I'm hoping someone can help or if this has ever happened to them.

I am flying out to a friends wedding on 25th August in Milan and departing on the 29th August. To my horror I discover than from the date of departure my 5 year old son's passport will only have 87 days left and from what I am reading he needs 90 days. I can't believe i have missed this and feel ill. I am flying with Ryanair who are apparently very strict.

I have managed to check him in online, any help and advice would be most gratefully appreciated. (my sons passport expires on 24th November 2025)

It’s to factor in any unexpected extension to your trip - illness, an Icelandic volcano that closes all the airports etc. Most countries do it and they don’t do it just to annoy holiday makers!

But if your passport runs out due to an unexpected occurance - you can obtain an Emergency Travel Document to return to the UK. Likewise if your passport is lost or stolen on holiday.
I think that in 99% of cases people with less than 3 months on their passport would travel in/out without any added complications such as the OP in this scenario.

Massive massive palaver to get
and might be ok for a Brit

but other countries… not so easy

But most travellers are likely to travel in and out without complications which theur passport is still valid. Like the OP - her son has 87 days left (3 short of the required 90). Unlikely that an unforseen circumstance will detain them for 88 days....

🤷‍♀️
I guess… just be organised and factor in individual country entry reqs when booking

my friend got to Greece with only 2 months on her passport- the rest of the family all had enough, they flagged it and then let her through!

@ReturnofjudeI thought you were asking me how long ago my friend got through passport control to Greece with only 2 months on her passport. Sorry if I misunderstood.

They took a huge risk then.

If she had been stopped at her destination airport and it was noticed, the airline that had let her travel would have faced a large fine and she would have been sent straight back home. Glad it worked out for your friend but you can see why it’s usually not worth the risk and why the departure airline wouldn’t normally do this.

OnePinkDeer · 26/08/2025 09:56

Bun fight aside I wonder what happened.

If she left ds behind or not

teacoffeeorpassthegin · 26/08/2025 10:16

@Returnofjudeyup I agree. They hadn’t realised until 3 days before. She just hoped they would let her pass. I’m not sure I would have been brave enough.

she was reckless
and Greece completely fucked up and broke pretty fundamental international passport regulations.

You have presumably never had to get an emergency passport. I have. Spent several days at the consulate. Had to pay something like £150 for the passport. It took several days. I missed my flight. Had to shell out best part of £1000 on new flights and extra hotel rooms (which was reimbursed by travel insurance… but still!)

We always carry colour photocopies of all our passports. My parents have (admittedly in the past) been allowed to travel home using the photocopies stamped by someone at the embassy. I assume that’s only possible if you can go to an embassy though and even then it may not be allowed any longer. Still I always suggest to people it’s a good idea to have copies as if nothing else it should make the process of proving who you are and getting replacements a bit less painful.

Yes I also do this now!
