Lake District in October?

I’ve always wanted to go to the Lake District but during the summer holidays we are always busy going other places. I wonder if it would be nice to go during mid tem holiday in October.
I don’t mind some rain, but if its pooring all week and you can’t see the view because of mist and low hanging clouds… and all trails are too muddy and slippery that would be a shame.

And if you wouldn’t advise Lake District what other part of the country is nicer in October? (We’re traveling from the Netherlands)

All of the north west of England is wet, the lakes is especially wet… Seathwaite in Borrowdale is the wettest place in England. It could be beautiful it could be horrendous.
It will also be incredibly busy in any school holiday which is worth factoring in.
in terms of underfoot conditions the Lake District paths are generally pretty well made stone trails.
I do like it a lot but I think you wanted to go to purely walk October is risky!

I understand it will be wet, but if it is still beautiful and hikeable I don’t mind.
If it is that busy, it is probably still worth the trip despite the weather?
I am traveling with two teens , we won’t hike all day also visit villages and museums. Want to visit Hadrians Wall as well, coming from the ferry in Newcastle.

I disagree. May and September are perfect times to visit the weather is always good then I find

even if it rains it’s still beautiful

it’s a year round resort. As long as you are prepared, have waterproofs etc you’ll be fine .

having done tge ferry many times it’s excellent and about 2 hours drive from north shields

Go to London in October! The weather will still be good, a lot of things are starting up for the holidays, most of the tourists have gone, and the hotels are cheaper.
In the country, many places are drier than the Lakes (i.e. nearly all of England!) but the historic homes (if you like that) are starting to close, the gardens (if they're still open) are not as alluring and, it can be chilly, especially up North.

The Lake District is stunningly beautiful. I've spent several holidays in accommodation close to Ullswater and Keswick. The one thing that puts me off is it can be very wet but as you're OK with that, why not? Good alternatives would be North Yorkshire or Northumberland, they both have stunning scenery and they're a bit drier.

We stay in Bowness for a week every October and get everything from glorious sunshine to thunder storms. Id advise to pack for every eventuality and take advantage of the good days.

North Wales would be worth a visit, a bit less rainfall than the lakes and quite compact plenty to see and do. Liverpool is also worth a visit.

It's a great time to visit - we only go in March/April and September/October. It will rain at some point. There's no doubt. It could rain all week, but if you're coming from Newcastle and visiting the wall you can always drive back over to Northumberland if the weather is awful. It might be safer to plan half the week on the East and half over on the west.

Rabbitrabbitrun · 23/07/2025 10:20

It could rain every day, or it might not.

The lake district is beautiful in October, the colours on the trees are so pretty that time of year. It's hard to comment on the weather, could be a dry week or could be a very wet week. I've had both all year round as long as you've got a waterproof coat you'll be fine. If it is wet there are still a lot of lower level walks to do, which are still very scenic, waterfalls, lake loops etc.

Cinaferna · 23/07/2025 10:26

I wouldn't. But that's because the joy of going to that area, for me, is long hikes and they could be cold, wet, slippery, dangerous or impossible if the weather is bad. At that time of year, it's better to have a holiday where there's plenty to do indoors, if it rains. Somewhere in Yorkshire, not far from York, would give you lovely countryside but the City to explore on rainy days. Or Northumberland - incredible scenery and coastline, boat trips to see seals etc if it's fine, but amazing castles, stately homes and loads to do in Newcastle, Alnwick, Whitley Bay etc if it rains.

HarrietBond · 23/07/2025 10:26

There is a lot in North Yorkshire which is, as others have said, generally dryer - the east side of the country gets less rain - and Northumberland along the east coast is also very beautiful.

But the Lake District in October isn't a stupid thing to consider. No one can guarantee any sort of weather anywhere but if you wouldn't mind getting wet, it's still a great place to be.

I went for a week in October wasn't too wet. Obviously there was rain but I cant remember there being loads. It was still really beautiful. I have also been in June so experienced both

Gardendiary · 23/07/2025 10:59

I’ve been to the Lake District several times in October and it’s never rained for the whole time. The worst time I’ve been was spring when the mist came down and we didn’t see anything. It’s completely gorgeous in the autumn when the leaves are changing colour. One year i was there and it got really cold and there was frost too and it looked stunning. We went in October last year and I did notice how much busier it was than previous years and there were certain places we couldn’t get parking, but we had plenty of dry weather in between the showers.
