Speed Awarness Course

I’m learning to drive, haven’t even got my license yet and was recently on a driving lesson where I’ve been caught by a van doing 35 in a 30. I remember my instructor was telling me about a road rule as I was slowing down so I was maybe a second or two late hitting the brakes. I’ve been offered a course or a fine. I just think it’s a bit unfair given I was on a lesson but if I have to pay I obviously will. Has anyone had any similar experiences and managed to appeal?

(sorry wasn’t sure what topic to pick)

@TheOliveFinch Thanks for your advice, I feel a bit more optimistic about the course after this thread. I think it will be interesting at least!

Definitely do the course. If you get points on your provisional they carry over onto your full licence when you pass, and as a new driver you only need 6 to lose your license.

Other readers may well have done so. I thought you were very rude upthread. I didn't report you as couldn't be bothered, but clearly you have carried on being rude.

Another plus for the speed awareness course is that MOST insurers don’t ask this question so you don’t have to declare it but always read the Statement of Facts carefully because some insurers do!

@LornaSaysYes Yeah that’s what all my family have said, I will do that - thank you!

Ive done a speed awareness course so has my wife, it’s pretty good to be honest. Both of us actually think they should be mandatory during learning, and on renewal of licenses (each 10 years), so can’t be that bad :)

yoshiro · 24/06/2025 19:50

@RH1234 Yeah everyone has essentially said they’re super positive which I’m happy with, looking forward to doing it aha!

Hmmm see I think while under instruction the instructor should hold some responsibility. No idea on legalities of that though. The speed awareness courses are good (I’ve done a couple over the years 🙈) so take the learning.

Yes I think so
