Self catering prices

It’s been a few years since I’ve booked a self catering holiday and I wonder if I’m just out of touch but …the cost!!! Is roughly minimum of around 150 per night the norm now - just curious for others’ experiences.

how many bedrooms and in what location? Sounds about average?

DeliaDeMagpie · 16/06/2025 20:02

@calishire 2 bedroom, south part of Devon, also looking at Scotland

Yes, the prices are much higher than before.
I think cheaper places have been squeezed out - we all expect a higher standard these days.
I think the rising cost of everything and Covid rocketed up prices. Like really hard to get your head around how much more energy, or cleaning, or maintenance, or insurance now costs.
And I do think there is some greedflation going on.

I was speaking to an owner of a campsite with cabins a couple of weeks ago up in Cairngorms - she was saying that bookings are down this year across Scotland for all self catering and hotels etc, and that it was a combination of people returning to Europe for warmth and prices now putting people off when Europe was cheaper. She predicted that prices will now 'stagnate', and was pointing out they were busier than some competitors as they remained a few pounds a night cheaper than direct competitors this year...

That’s interesting @outdooryone. It’s pre Covid my last SC holiday. I think you’re right about standards. It always makes me smile if I see reviews that say a place was “home from home” - noooo, I want somewhere nicer than my home for a holiday. I priced up a uk holiday vs a decent holiday self catering in Europe, and it was pretty well the same. I suppose it comes down to where you want to have a holiday on a similar budget. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few years. Meantime, not having had a holiday for some time at least I’ve saved for it 😂

We did a couple of s/c holidays just after Covid and found the prices were higher.

But we are also fussy, we want something comfortable with a dishwasher, washing machine, outdoor space, in a town with parking and walking distance to everything. That all will put prices up.

Saying that, I also found that s/c in Europe (similar type of accomodation) is more expensive then pre-Covid so I think it's a general trend.
