Where to go UK October?

Looking to go away October half term in the UK but unsure where to go. We will have a 4 year old and a 1 year old. I'm aware weather won't be great but still wanting to get away. We've considered Lake District, Wales and Northumberland. Based in East Mids so usually most distances are ok.

Does anyone have any advice?

Found Northumberland a bit meh when we once went around that time of year. Alnwick castle was nice, and had a very wet walk with some grumpy alpacas. Otherwise, unless you want lots of damp walks, I’d pass.

Peak district? A bit more going on for all weather conditions.

The New Forest looks especially lovely in Autumn. It’s quite flat, so lots of pushchair friendly walks and easy cycles. My dd loved spotting the wild ponies. You could do a day at Paulton’s, or Longdown if you’re not a fan of Peppa Pig! There’s a good playground at Beaulieu, as well as lots of hands on exhibits inside the museum.

With those ages I always think it’s ideal to have access to a swimming pool, whether in a holiday park/hotel or just a public one nearby. We’ve spent many a miserable October half term afternoon at the pool.

The Tower of London had about six or eight ghosts or other historical figures wandering it last October half term and it made the tour very exciting (and spooky) for kids.

I’d stick to city breaks at that time of year.

We did York and that was a good mix of things to do and enough indoors when the weather turned.

New Forest - lovely but if it is a rainy half term less so.

We go to Bowness every October, sometimes it rains, sometimes it's glorious sunshine. BUT most importantly it's so much quieter!

We had a week in a cottage in the Scottish Highlands last October . It only rained on one day .
we saw some fabulous scenery, Ben Nevis , Isle of Skye , Loch Ness and loads of other beautiful places. We went out every day and I would go back in a heartbeat. I am quite jealous of the people who live there permanently.
