Anyone been to West Wittering?

A friend has told me West Wittering has a lovely sandy beach and from pics on the internet it does indeed look lovely. Am now considering going there for a week in August with DC's (2 and 5).

Has anyone been there/live there? Can you recommend any nice self catering cottages? Any other info would also be greatly appreciated.

TIA

I've been there for day trips and it really is lovely. The beach is wide, sandy and shallow (really safe for children) fringed by really pretty beach huts.

It's a privately owned beach, so you have to pay about a fiver to park on the carpark or you can take the (bit longish) walk from the main road.

Its quite posh. I think the self-catering accommodation is in slightly less-well-off East Wittering (although I could be absolutely talking out of my arse on this one).

Yes it's lovely and perfect for young kids. It is a fiver to park which is outrageous but I guess if you're settling in for the day there it's not so bad...

near chichester, which I don't know if you've been to, but it's a really lovely town - good for mummy shopping

There is also a campsite at West Wittering. I haven't stayed there, but dd's teacher has. West Wittering is gorgeous. It is our favourite 'local' beach.

I used to work in the beach cafe there some summers. 'Tis nice.

Was there briefly at the weekend. Nice big sandy beach. But as far as I could see, no ice cream parlours or shops selling buckets and spades. Which is what I want from the seaside!

PestoMonster · 22/05/2008 21:59

Lapin, whilst you're on, have you ever done the hovercraft & iceskating thing in Ryde, Isle of wIght? Have only just found out abou t this, and wondered if it's any good? Real ice? Thankyou

it is lovely there, east wittering has more shops and cafes, and a lot of camping/holiday sites as well

the beach is shingle/stone then sand

my sister has a holiday house right on the beach on east wittering, with private raised access overlooking the beach

it isnt less well off at all, the beachfront houses are usually over 500k, it's just more of a small town compared to w w

edam · 22/05/2008 21:59

In fact it is so vast it takes a long, long time to walk out to somewhere you can paddle.

lou33 · 22/05/2008 22:00

the beach at e w i mean

lou33 · 22/05/2008 22:01

ooh yes chichester is great for shopping

i also love the huge tesco extra there

fishie · 22/05/2008 22:02

bracklesham is a bit further along from ew, fantastic beaches, really long and shallow with gentle tides. black sand because of fossil mud beds. i used to go as a child and occasionally there would be super low tides and could pick fossils out.

WendyWeber · 22/05/2008 22:11

Which one has a nice wide stretch of grass behind the beach, where you can park & have picnics etc? We used to go there (wherever it is) when I was little...
