UK weekend away recommendations

I want to book a weekend away for myself & DH at the end of June. It's our wedding anniversary, I've recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, we've cancelled our holiday and everything is just generally a bit miserable at the minute.

In all honesty, I don't know what we want to do. I flit between a shepherds hut in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do but walk and rest. To then a really nice hotel with amazing food etc.

So, any recommendations covering all basis really. I don't mind how far we travel, will consider everything.

Look forward to being inspired !

Where are you starting from? I know you say you don't mind how far you travel but realistically if you're only going for 2 or 3 nights then you're not going to want to spend 8-10 hours driving each way!

I'm pretty central in the Midlands so most places aren't going to be an issue unless we are talking Inverness. I don't mind a good few hours travelling, all part of the adventure

We stayed in an amazing shepherd’s hut near Hay on Wye - right in the middle of nowhere but with everything we needed and the town about 10/15 mins away for browsing/food/shops etc. Highly recommended x

strikes Inverness and beyond off the list
city break in Edinburgh
nice hotel in the Lake District - combining nice food and relaxing country walks. The Drunken Duck or Queens Head at Troutbeck
Northumberland - quieter than the Lakes and the option of coastal walks. can recommend the Pheasant Inn at Kielder, Bertrams in Warkworth, or St Valery in Alnmouth.
Peak District - combo of walks and good food. Maybe The Peacock at Rowsley near Bakewell.

The hits, wagons and cabins at The Pig in the New Forest have the best of both worlds.

We had a really relaxing weekend here in North Yorkshire. You can drive into Malton for amazing food and the views are stunning. Very tranquil, just a lovely place to sit, read and spend time together.

@MiddleAgedDread has made some lovely suggestions.

I love Edinburgh, Oxford, London for City breaks. But also enjoy Norfolk, North Yorkshire, St Andrews, Helmsley, Beverley, Harrogate, East Neuk of Fife and Northumberland if you like beaches you can walk and explore a different lovely beach each day in the latter two places.

Given what you have gone through are going through do you fancy a distracting break in which case I would opt for a busier city break or a quiet break with more time on your hands?
