Looking at a family trip to Guernsey. Can anyone suggest anywhere to stay please? Probably self catering best but open to child-friendly hotels. All seems very pricey on first glance. Also, what are the best things to do on the island for children? Thanks in advance - hit me with your recommendations 😊

Sorry just realised I repeated some existing suggestions!

If your kids are old enough to cycle, I thoroughly recommend a day trip to Sark hiring bikes and cycling the island. It's only small, so it isn't too hard. There is a wonderful farm house restaurant somewhere in the centre of the island that did the best fresh lobsters but I can't remember what it was called.

That sounds lovely - we do enjoy cycling. Is it easy enough to hire bikes once over on Sark?

I live in guernsey and it is a wonderful
place to bring kids.

how old are your kids and are you coming in term
time? There are a couple of excellent glampsites with fab tents/cabins.

10 and 7. Oh the glamping sites sounds a possibility - I'll Google and see if I can find them. Thank you.

I live in Guernsey and have children of a similar age. Agree accommodation is not cheap. I can recommend hotels and apartments.

Self catering options:

https://www.visitguernsey.com/accommodation/places-to-stay-in-guernsey/

in terms of things to do for that sort of age:

surf lesson at Vazon
trip to Herm for the day
castle cornet
saumarez park - large park with cafe and good children’s play area
trip out on a boat - Island Rib Voyages or Out of the Blue are both great
GOLF19 has pirate mini golf and golf driving range
Saumarez Manor has a little train, sculpture gardens, pitch and putt and a small play area
Oatlands has indoor play area, mini golf and trampolines
Outdoor bathing pools at Havelet
lots and lots of different beaches
Underground Hospital museum
occupation Museum
candie Museum
little Chapel
Karting

Different events take place over the summer:

The Street Festival in St Peter Port from 26th July to 9th August. Including performances from musicians, actors, dancers, fairies, puppeteers, storytellers, and superheroes

Country show type events in late August

music gigs at cobo bay

i could go on so please shout if you want particular information

This is so helpful, thank you! If you are able to share any particular favourite accommodation providers, that would be great. I'm going to take time to read through your list properly later on

It's very easy to hire bikes on Sark, there are a couple of different places on the main street. There is a tractor that takes you up from the harbour to the main street. It's really small so you can't miss where to go. And there's no cars so very safe cycling

10 and 7. Oh the glamping sites sounds a possibility - I'll Google and see if I can find them. Thank you.

Here are a couple of glamping options...

La Bailloterie Campsite - Home - Camping in Guernsey

Camps du Reves - Home - Camp de Rêves Glampsite Guernsey

Fauxquets Valley Campsite - Home - Fauxquets Valley Camping & Glamping

All of which are lovely - Camps du Reves is probably the most expensive but it utterly glorious. Fauxquets Valley is a more traditional campsite but also has a swimming pool.

La Bailloterie Camping Site

La Bailloterie Camping, a 10-acre site, is situated in the north of the island in a rural setting, yet close to all the main services. It is the longest established site in the island with the newest facilities, having recently gone through a refurbish...

I've just been reading about the flight paths. Do you get much plane noise early morning or evening?

Not really... mind you the local airline is a bit of a shitshow this week with cancellations. They are having a bad week!

Pilateshappy · 02/06/2025 16:15

I don't think you need to worry about plane noise! I lived in Guernsey for a few years and never once was bothered by any plane noise!

The garden centre Le Friquet is good for a rainy day as it has a cafe and soft play!

I would really recommend the 'underground hospital' if the kids are old enough to not be too freaked out - it's pretty dark and creepy.

It's truly one of my favourite places on earth so you'll have a great time!

Hope Aurigny are more reliable these days. They cancelled our flight less than 12 hours before we were due to fly there for the weekend two years ago, so I never got to go there.

If Ihad the opportunity to go again I'd fly to Jersey on BA and get the ferry just to avoid them

babasaclover · 02/06/2025 19:22

spoonbillstretford · 02/06/2025 19:22

Ha - Aurigny sound just as bad from previous posts.

Bear in mind if they cancel, the weekend is over as you won't get on another flight at short notice.

DrCoconut · 02/06/2025 19:25

I can't remember the name of the hotel we stayed in but it was lovely. Outdoor pool was freezing though even in August.Wr went to St Peter Port and the little chapel. Bus services were really regular and cheap.

Was there fog?

No, something operational and their fault. We got compensation and a full refund. But still, not nice to have your short break cancelled by text just after you put your bikini in the case.

FranKubelik · 03/06/2025 00:12

I’d recommend Chateau Grandes Rocques s/c apartments. Have stayed there several times. It has a small indoor pool and games room and is very near the lovely beach (with cafe). Has a bus stop but also walking distance to Cobo. Haven’t been for a couple of years as DC are older now but have such great memories of Guernsey.

Several planes went tech and then there were planes in the wrong place, crew sickness etc. hopefully they have got a grip and resolved it all now!

Oh dear, this doesn't fill me with much confidence!

Is it always smallish planes to Guernsey? Are they noisier?
