We are staying south of Bude and we’ve done beaches in the rain. Have tweens but looking for something for dh and I which is less child focused but enjoyable. We have done lots for them already!

any recommendations

anything within an hour or so drive is fine

Plymouth aquarium? If you can get to a train station Plymouth is accessible by train. Sadly it’s very beach-y down there which isn’t good when the weather is like this! St Ives is very pretty and has some art galleries

The museum of witchcraft in Boscastle, just up the road is interesting, albeit small. Clovelly is unusual and beautiful, the Rebel is a local indie cinema right near Bude. You have Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor in shouting distance if you fancy some awe-inspiring views. Brentor Church on Dartmoor is stunning.
Weather forecast is looking a bit better for the next day or so. Fingers crossed for you!

Welcome to Kernow!
I'm not far from Bude so can recommend the following for indoor/fun away from the beach...

Bude has a indoor pool and bowling alley/massive soft play (for up to 11years iI I think) with pool tables and a small arcade. Opposite Morrisons.

Bude Castle has a museum/visitors centre which is free and really interesting and well done.

Sandymouth and Hedley Bridge holiday parks allow non-residents for swimming for a small fee - call them to check

Rebel Cinema is a lovely independant cinema just south of Bude

Penhallam Manor - woodland walk with rope swings leads to the ruins of a medieval manor. Nice and sheltered for if its windy.

Discovery42 in Bodmin and Bodmin Jail

Lanhydrock is a really good, interesting NT property - kitchens, servants quarters and the nursery/school room are evocative and more relatable IMO especially for children

Cardinham Woods - play areas, bike and walking trails. Great cafe.

Wadebridge - nice for a mooch, cool vintage shop, massive park, cute old fashioned cinema.

Strawberry Fields Farmshop at Lifton - animals to look at, incredible farm shop for stocking up on goodies, strawberry picking, play areas. This is near Launceston just off the A30

Hope that helps!

I don’t get the love for Discovery 42. It was really in need of some TLC when I visited with DD.

Juggletits · 29/05/2025 14:41

Really? @Cornishmumofonethat's a shame. I guess we went when it was fresh and new

Looe, Padstow, Perranporth, Port Isaac, Tintagel, Boscastle 🙂

Eden project

PlantDoctor · 29/05/2025 18:27

I really like discovering42 for a local hour or two out, but maybe not an all-day tourist type thing. Not much else to do on a rainy day in Bodmin either, although cardinham and lanhydrock are both nearby.

Heligan is a lovely family day out (edit to add: mostly outside). Eden project is definitely worth a visit once (very expensive - check prices, but it is a whole day and lots inside). Maybe a wander around one of the old seaside towns such as Padstow (get there early if you want a parking space!) or Fowey if you don't mind getting wet.

Don't know much of Devon but the above recommendation for Plymouth aquarium is good! There are also zoos in Newquay (small) and Paignton (bigger) if you like that sort of thing, with lots of bits indoors if it rains. Weather is meant to be picking up going into the weekend though 🤞

PlantDoctor · 29/05/2025 18:30

Another idea : Kayaking/canoeing at siblyback lake -doesnt matter if you get rained on then!

Eaglemom · 29/05/2025 18:46

Hartland Quay, small but really interesting museum and a great pub, beautiful scenery and Hartland point. You should see seals playing.

HaggardyOldSkin · 29/05/2025 18:54

Wooda Farm Holiday Park was great when we visited when staying in Bude. Segways were really good and my young teens enjoyed it but adults did too.

Caerulea · 29/05/2025 19:28

There are some really good escape rooms in Bodmin - Housetrap & Dreadlock are the two companies. You could have a wander on the moors after - bloody magical, the moors

Jamaica Inn - Daphne Du Marier Museum
Golitha Falls
St Nectans Glen
Launceston castle and museum
Ww2 museum on Davidstow
Climb up Roughtor

WonderingWanda · 29/05/2025 23:19

Near to Bude then Hartland Abbey is interesting to look around and has some very pretty gardens. Also Clovelley is worth a visit.

Further away you could hire bikes and ride the Granite Way from Okehapmton to Lydford. Lydford Gorge is worth a visit. From Melson reservoir walk up to High Wilhays through Black-a-Tor copse, a little patch of temperate rainforest.

Deeper in to Cornwall The Eden project is worth a visit as are The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

In Devon, Totnes is a nice town to visit, lots of independent shops.

soupyspoon · 29/05/2025 23:23

Hire bikes from Great Torrington to Ifracombe

Tabardwearer · 30/05/2025 10:30

A walk on Dartmoor (Bellever/Princetown)
Tavistock for a cream tea
Looe for fish and chips (The Catch)
Strawberry Fields at Lifton
