Lake District

Hi!

DH and I have a motor home booked for May half term with our two dogs and are heading up to the Lake District.

Any local tips for areas to focus on? Avoiding Windermere and Ambleside as we have already been there, looking for a quieter spot with lovely walks and some nice dog friendly pubs, if the dogs(and us!) can find some lovely swimming spots that would be great too!

Buttermere is stunning! Its really easy to walk round and the dogs can have a swim. Go early though, it gets busy x

Another vote for Buttermere. Go very early in the morning. 6 or 7am. It'll be so beautiful and peaceful. Rydal also fab for walks and swimming. Pubs are great in Grasmere and Keswick.

Thank you both! It's on my list!
We are definitely visiting Keswick as staying not too far from there...

There’s a dog activity walk at Grisedale! https://www.forestryengland.uk/grizedale/forest-walkies

This looks cute! Thank you!

Coniston is lovely, been several times with a dog. Also Keswick, though that can get busy....

Writing as a 'local', may I suggest that you travel around the area from your campsite using the local bus services. Parking for a car is a nightmare in popular places within the Lake District during the Summer months so I certainly would not recommend driving/parking a motorhome anywhere for a day out!
Keswick is great for swimming in the lake and there are walks in that area to suit all abilities, your campsite should have lots of information to help you with ideas. Keswick is also a very dog friendly place if you plan to eat out

Absolutely! We have specifically chosen our campsite because there's a bus stop close by, the last thing we want to do is drive around! The dogs are used to buses so it'll be an adventure!
Really looking forward to it, we have visited Keswick before (without the dogs) and loved it.
Thanks!

If you can get to Threlkeld, there’s not a huge amount to do there but it’s a nice village, there’s a lovely 5k walk to Keswick down what used to be the railway line

Parky04 · 06/05/2025 07:59

If you want a lake that is very quiet then Loweswater is well worth a visit. We spent a few hours there and didn't see another person.

CurbsideProphet · 06/05/2025 07:59

We love getting the bus around the Lakes. It's a better service than where we live in Lancashire!

The Keswick to Threlkeld walk is nice and the last time we ate at The Horse and Farrier in Threlkeld the food was great.

CountryQueen · 06/05/2025 09:53

Which campsite? If you’re using buses then this is going to matter!

ShineyGuyNamedChad · 06/05/2025 10:30

Buttermere will be holding the annual Buttermere Bash during May half term, from weds gets very busy.
We’ll be be there camping on the lake shore, stunning view to wake up to!

@CurbsideProphetour friends live literally next door to the white horse. Share the same entrance and exit.

There is a lovely site in Keswick, C and C derwentwater, it's a 2 minute walk to the town, also a nice site in Troutbeck, nr. Keswick.
Amazing walks up the hills.
We go every 6 weeks in our motorhome.
The dogs love it and are welcomed everywhere.
Iains taxis are dog friendly, we use him all the time.
The south lakes are beautiful and you don't need to be near touristy parts.
