M1 - so called smart motorway

Hello,

I would welcome your views on the so called smart motorway known as the M1. I have this evening received a second notice of intended prosecution. Apparently I was doing 68 when the limit was 60.

Last year I received my first 3 points for doing 54 on the M1 again when apparently the limits was 40.

I am going through menopause and have fog brain. With the wretched speed changing so frequently, I can’t keep up with it. Is it just me? Or is anyone else experiencing this?

I am in my 50’s and a careful driver. I feel upset and angry at this fraudulently money making scheme as I see it. My car insurance will go up again with more penalty points.

I see maniacs on the M1 who know where the cameras are and get away with dangerous driving. Why not clamp down on them?

I would welcome your views/experiences of the M1.

OP, learn a lesson about MN, they are all expert drivers and never ever do anything wrong in their cars and will castigate relentlessly on threads like this

Not just on MN, almost everyone thinks they are above average!! and spend too much time criticising others instead of worrying about their own driving....

Must we blame every shortcoming on the menopause?

While I know that it is a problem for many women, it is in danger of becoming the default get out card for poor decision making, and will unltimately become a counterproductive reason, just like people playing the mental health card for poor behaviour.

Even most below-average drivers are capable of remembering a number. The OP isn't just a less-than-perfect driver, she's an accident waiting to happen.

spicemaiden · 18/04/2025 20:33

Sorry op - I drive the m1 regularly. The numbers on the gantries are clear. Speed changers on an and b roads are no different but there are far fewer cameras to catch people out. You’re clearly not remembering those speed changes either but it’s not noticing r as you’re not being caught.

You shouldn’t be driving.

Literally no one has claimed to be a great driver.

100% sure I am capable of driving.

If you can’t remember what speed you spend be driving I’m 100% sure you are not.

Learn to use the speed limiter.

autumn1610 · 19/04/2025 10:24

I drive on it pretty much everyday for work. It’s not hard I’m sorry to read the speed limit and stick to it. I so far have never got a ticket. If you can’t read speed limits maybe don’t be driving 🤷‍♀️

I find speed limiters quite dangerous. I use cruise control instead.

Every gantry over the motorway which has the speed limit displayed on, it contains a speed camera and if you’re exceeding the limit you will get prosecuted. The maniacs will also be prosecuted or if not, on cloned plates. It’s not difficult to keep your eye on the signs and control your speed, you’re obviously not a careful driver and it’s not fraudulent money making scheme.

Not every gantry has a camera. On my drive from jnc 29 to 25 there are only 2 or 3 cameras on the gantry’s. You can see which ones have them as they stick out to the side. That’s probably why you see people drive through them at speed as they likely know which ones have the cameras and which ones dont

I use both. I'm not sure why speed limiters would be dangerous but I use the speed limiter if I'm in town but the road is quite clear (e.g. there's an average speed camera on a road out of town) and TBF I use cruise control on the motorway.
She needs to learn to use both.
