Getaway like Bath

Looking for recommendations for a two/three night getaway within 200 miles of London. Something like Bath (pretty, walkable, things to see). But not Bath. Nor Cambridge. Any suggestions? Me and 19 year old DD trip.

York?

ginasevern · 01/04/2025 18:35

York is probably the obvious answer but Canterbury, Chester, Oxford, Wells and Exeter would tick your boxes.

Wells, Ludlow, Norwich

Oxford , Stratford-upon-Avon .

We’ve been in York for the past couple of days. It’s been great. We bought the visit York passes and in two days have done some fun things including Jorvik Viking centre, York Dungeon, The York Chocolate Story(a few samples included), Axe throwing, open top bus, 45 minute cruise & York Minster - there’s are lots more places included. We found a discount code on-line which made the cost even cheaper. It was a real bargain. We went to the famous ‘Betty’s tea room’. It’s very walkable, too.

You could switch it up a bit and do Brighton or (hear me out) Portsmouth. The city centre is pretty grim but it has Gunwharf shopping outlet with quite a few big brands, Mary Rose Museum which is incredible, lovely walks around Old Portsmouth and Southsea. You can even do a day trip to the Isle of Wight on the hovercraft if you were so inclined. Chichester is 20 minutes down the road if you’re after a cathedral.

Cardiff

Forget the distance and just go to Edinburgh? Nowhere else is quite as Bath-y, but it has the advantage of being a capital city so there’s far more to do. Lively, walkable, absolutely stunning wherever you turn …

Bristol. Stay in Clifton for Bath-like, village/posh vibes but can also easily get to the harbourside and ‘cooler’ parts (Gloucester Road/Stokes Croft etc)

tobee · 02/04/2025 00:58

Liverpool! Totally different vibe to Bath and a few miles over 200 but great place to walk around! Loads of history etc.

I'd go seaside. Whitstable, Broadstairs, Exmouth or Brighton.

Mumof1andacat · 02/04/2025 07:28

Another poster said portsmouth and agree. The town it self isn't great but the dockyards, old portsmouth and southsea are lovely. Winchester, Oxford, York, Canterbury and Salisbury might be worth looking at.

I’m fairly local to Portsmouth and while I agree some areas are lovely but I think you’d run out of things in a day.

Shrewsbury / Ludlow (maybe do both - easy train ride or drive between), Edinburgh, Chester, Oxford, Cambridge would be my picks.

I think your 19 year old would possibly like Brighton. Really nice vibe and lots to sea. Plenty of shops and good restaurants. Nightlife is good to in Brighton and Hove.
