How to spend a day in Bristol

irishbloodenglishparts · 30/03/2025 18:30

I’ll be spending the day in Bristol next Saturday and am looking for suggestions of things to do/see etc

I’m familiar with Ikea and Cribbs but I’ve only ever been into the city for work in the past and that was a while ago.

I will be with a 12yo who likes looking at buildings etc, and eating!

Thanks

St Nick's Market for a.look around the stalls and street food.
Walk around the docks and see the Matthew and the Ss Great Britain.
Look up the street art walks in Banksy.

(All in North Bristol).

We the curious

M-shed is interesting (and free) with lots of culture/social history of Bristol stuff to look at and situated on the harbour side - the Matthew is normally moored nearby then walk along to SS Great Britain and get the little ferry across the harbour to Millennium Square. Then go past We the Curious and up the steps to the Cathedral (free) and up Park Street. Spot a Banksy at the bottom of Park Street and walk up to the Bristol Museum (also free - beautiful building, lots of quirky exhibits, several Banksy installations) then onwards to Clifton and the suspension bridge.
We also like the street food at St Nick‘s market and eating it in Castle Park if it’s a nice day but a little out of the way for the above route. If you decide to stick around the harbour side there is a hop on hop off ferry that would take you up to Castle Park and also stops at SS Great Britain and up to Underfall Yard. Good way to get a good view of the coloured houses at Hotwells and all the activity around the harbour.
SS Great Britain and We the Curious both good but quite expensive so you’d want to devote several hours if you chose to do one.

Boat trips, Clifton Downs, St Werberghs city farm (amazing eco building nearby and great pub) Banksy spotting and meal at Za Za Bazaar, biggest all you can eat in Europe I think but very good quality- teens love it!

Treasure Trails and Mystery Guides both have great walking tours of Bristol.

The Suspension Bridge, definitely. Just came highly recommended from someone who went there yesterday.

Escape Hunt escape rooms in Cabot Circus have some "walking tour" escape-room-type puzzles where they give you an iPad and a briefcase of clues and you have to get to various points around the city centre to solve the puzzle. It's good fun.

It’s worth getting a ticket and exploring SS Great Britain, the ship is very well done with fascinating reconstructions in the cabins etc, and you can look underneath in the dry dock. perfect for a 12 yo. And you can get there on the little ferry trip from the harbour side area.

Lunch is St Nicholas Market first. Then M Shed or We the Curious and sit outside on harbour side for ice cream and drink.

Brandon Hill (park) is good on a nice day, you can climb Cabot Tower for a great view. There are some quirky new sculptures around too a bit further from the Centre which are fun, a twisted telephone box and post box. I was going to attach a photo but computer says no

Wow some great ideas here thank you!
I think I’ll need more than one day but a return visit is easily doable.

The main museum is good, SS Great Britain is good if a little pricey, the aerospace museum is good but not in the centre. If eating means lots of food you can’t beat Za Za Bazaar which is a buffet but much better than most, lots of fresh cook stations and from around the world. It’s right on the harbour side. You can take boat trips too
