Abergavenny local knowledge?

We're through Abergavenny (en route from Midlands to West Wales) next week with a dog and teenager and am looking for somewhere nice for a pitstop - loo break, food etc. Can anyone local recommend somewhere central and accessible where we can park up, maybe explore the town centre etc. At the moment Waitrose looks a possibility, but is there somewhere better? Thanks!

I prefer Crickhowell, there are lovely pubs and coffee shops.

If you do stop at the Abergavenny Waitrose there’s a footpath nearby along the river that could be good for a bit of excercise for the dog.

Abergavenny is a lovely town with lots of independent shops and cafes. I highly recommend the cafe at Little Green Refills (all veggie), middle Eastern food at Mezze Me, and the fab bakery Ty Melin. The Angel Hotel is very posh! A walk around Linda Vista Gardens (free) is lovely, and right next to one of the large car parks.

There are lots of nicer places than Waitrose in the town!

Thanks all. I do know there is a lot more to Abergavenny than Waitrose, that's why I came here to ask for local recommendations 😀

I don't know it well, but we met friends there because it worked for a mid point last year. The castle / museum is small but free entry so entertained the kids for a short time when it rained. There were a few marked footpaths to stretch your legs. We parked in a pay and display which had toilets - I remember it was opposite Aldi, as we popped on for snacks. There were loads of cafes and pubs but we didn't use them as had little ones who wanted to run around with us.

Park in the main car park (bus station), and have a wander through town, lots of dog friendly cafes, a lovely one called ‘coffee lab’ or ‘portico lounge’ if you want something to eat. Most shops dog friendly too!
There is an Aldi opposite the main car park or a Tesco at the top end of town for supplies.
Waitrose is on the outskirts of town, there is a Costa and MacDonalds on the roundabout but it would be much nicer to be in the town for a wander, it’s a beautiful place.
