Lake District Hotel Recommendations

I’m looking for hotel recommendations for a country house hotel near Ambleside. Something with excellent food , service and a Lakeland out look- traditional rather than glitzy! I worked at the Kirkstone Foot Hotel years ago and thought that would be the ticket but turns out it is no longer!

Forest Side in Grasmere?

Has anyone had a positive experience at the Low Wood near Ambleside?

The spa is really lovely. The pool looks out over the Lake, there’s a little bar by the outside spa pool so you can have a glass of something watching the sunset over the lake.

The hotel is split in 2 halves, one more exclusive and pricy than the other. The cheaper half is absolutely fine, it’s not mega luxury but nice country house style. Not stayed in the posher half!

Food is good.

It’s right on the lake with its own jetty. Walkable into Ambleside although it’s a bit of a walk.

We like the Wild Boar. Food is amazing, there's a log fire, beautiful rooms and large woods to walk in.

I stayed in Keswick, b&b at the hotel and a quick walk to restaurants. I prefer this in places with good restaurants

I have the same question but Ullswater or one of the less touristy Lakes.

barefootcook · 27/03/2025 17:17

Thank you. That’s very helpful. Ullswater is lovely too— that’s got me thinking too!

I have always loved the Keswick Country House Hotel.

barefootcook · 31/03/2025 05:11

That looks gorgeous too! Thank you.

Overwater hall near Bassenthwaite is a gorgeous hotel in the middle of nowhere. My parents went twice a year for 25 years plus and I have been 3 times. Excellent food and service but there are no facilities like pool or spa. But great wildlife.

We live locally, so obviously don't stay in hotels very often, but I have stayed at the Low Wood once and it was very nice. Nothing "extraordinary" about it, but certainly a pleasant stay and the views are beautiful.
I've never stayed overnight but have been to a couple of events at the Daffodil Hotel in Grasmere which isn't too far from Ambleside, and the food was good. I've never been in any of the bedrooms but the public areas are very pleasant.
I am currently dropping hints to my DH that I'd like to spend a weekend at the Langdale Chase next year when I have a milestone birthday. I've always wanted to stay there but difficult to justify the expense when it's so close to home! It does look absolutely beautiful though and is newly refurbished.
We keep our boat on Ullswater and there are a quite lot of nice hotels with lake fronts. Unfortunately the Sharrow Bay Hotel which would normally be my first choice has been sold and is currently closed for refurbishment. Another Place seems really popular at the moment but I haven't been there. The Inn on the Lake in Glenridding is another beautifully located hotel - again, I've not stayed but have had a lovely afternoon tea there and imagine it would be a very nice place to stay.

Thank you for taking the time to do this AgeingDoc. I remember Langdale Chase from years ago would to stay there too. So many beautiful places but only 4 nights in the Lakes so will need to choose carefully!

I have stayed at the Inn on the Lake and wouldn’t recommend it. I’ve also been for lunch and coffee. It’s packed with events like weddings going on with bits of the hotel cordoned off to guests. We stayed in one of their lake view rooms and didn’t find it very appealing. Tired, dated furniture and bathrooms. Food is nothing great and lunch is of the burgers and chips variety. It is in a lovely setting but all the rest isn’t great .

Fair enough. I went for afternoon tea on a weekday out of season and it was pleasant enough and very quiet. I don't often go to places when they're likely to be busy as I'm fortunate enough to have the choice so probably get a skewed perspective.

I haven't stayed overnight but I have had lovely food at these lakeside hotels -

The Langdale Chase
Storrs Hall
The Inn on the Lake

All 3 of those were really nice.
