Me, DP and 3 dc (15, 12, 9) are going to Cornwall in June for 7 days.

What days out do you recommend? They're not daredevils so nothing too adventurous please.

I have...

Tintagel Castle (but we're Welsh and have seen at least a million castles so might just go and see the gorgeous coastline there).
Camel Creek
Lappa Valley
Eden Project
Hidden Valley
Enormous Slip and Slide
Bodmin Jail
Museum of Witchcraft
Minack Theatre

Have I missed anything? This is too much for 7 days I know but if anyone knows of anywhere not to be missed we'll have a rejig.

Any restaurant recommendations which are nice but not too pricey? Any tips gratefully received.

Thank you 😊

Oh, if you are down that way then you might enjoy the seal sanctuary near Gweek.

Yes good shout for the seal sanctuary. There is also a sea safari trip you can do from Rock or Padstow to see (sometimes) seals but always dolphins which is great for both kids and adults. We try to do it every year, never get tired of it. You can book online.

I'd only attempt 3 proper day trips in a week otherwise you'll be fed up of being int he car all the time. You need chill out / pottering time!

Thanks all, some excellent advice here.

We are used to holidaying in rural France where everything is an hour away and don't mind driving. I do love beaches but we're not an all day at the beach family. Crabbing and rock pooling yes, but not sitting and sunbathing, we get bored. I now plan to get them bodyboards though.

I write historical fiction and am particularly keen on visiting Bodmin Jail, it seems that it's changed lately and is less of a thing now but I really do want to go (but will be doing so with tempered expectations now).

Lappa Valley has gone and Eden Project is teetering on the edge. Perhaps we will go to Heligan and then have a half day exploring too.

We're going to need to come back, definitely.

Oh and would it be helpful/respectful to learn some Cornish? We've made sure to use purpose built tourist accommodation and don't like to stay in cottages that ought to be homes. Cornwall is similar to Wales in many respects and I am sensitive to the issues associated with tourism.

As an aside as you've mentioned it, please don't buy cheap bodyboards from supermarkets or similar, they are crap and will break incredibly quickly.

Every year there are piles and piles of these boards in big skips by all the popular beaches, it's just more plastic waste.

Please rent boards (rental available on most beaches) if you're not sure how much you'll use them or buy good quality boards from surf shops if you get the bug.

Boards should last years, my family still has the body board that was bought for me as a child over 25 years ago, it's now used regularly by my nieces.

You've got loads of great ideas here. Just a couple of additional thoughts - depending on when in June, the Falmouth Sea Shanty festival is great fun. Slightly a victim of its own success as it gets madly busy, but it's still great, and my kids have enjoyed it at all ages.

If you're on the lizard, Roskilly's is a nice stop for an ice cream/cream tea, bit of a walk.

Make sure you have pasties/ice creams/fish and chips etc.

We go to rural France every year and driving for an hour there is a considerably more pleasant experience than driving for an hour in Cornwall in summer. It's the unpredicatability of it - e.g., if you get stuck behind a tractor on the Helston to Penzance road, there is nowhere to pass it - you're stuck. Parking is also often Not Fun. (Not saying it's not worth it - we like to pack a lot into our holidays too - but just saying it's a different beast.)

Oh I know we have too much planned, we don't get away much so I'm finding too many excellent things to do and can't choose what to knock off the list. I have taken the driving thing on board and will whittle days out down to perhaps four and that leaves four days for pottering about looking for crabs.

Will definitely not buy shit bodyboards, thank you for that. I had never thought about it and totally would have been that person. We'll rent them.

Hidden Valley
Camel Creek
Bodmin Jail
Minack Theatre

The Slip n Slide is super close and could be combined with a beach day. We could maybe do the closer foot golf too.

As for beaches, they're all great aren't they? We can't go wrong there, but our accommodation is on Porth beach essentially so beach evenings are definitely doable.

We will probably do one of the other gardens, and the Eden Project only if it rains.

Thank you all for wobbling my head.

Porth is a lovely, easy beach with toilets and The Mermaid pub with benches right on the sand, they'll have different entertainment like quizzes and music on on different days so maybe have a look at their Facebook page if you might be interested in that sort of thing.

Make sure you go over the bridge to Porth Island and also venture under the bridge at low tide (keep an eye on tide times, don't get cut off) when a little extra beach and lots of rockpools are revealed between Porth and Whipsiderry.

There are seven beaches in Newquay and Porth is a great base from which to walk or bus to all of them (avoids having to park).

I recommend the Fern Pit Cafe in Newquay, the view over the Gannel and Crantock Beach can't be beaten (google it) and it's still relatively unknown, it has a carpark and there is a footpath and ferry over to Crantock Beach from there too so you can access that on foot. Crantock is a beautiful village with two pubs which will again have entertainment etc on in the summer so worth checking out what might be on online later on.

Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival is amazing and definitiely worth a visit if you can fit it in, we saw the Fisherman's Friends there last year, completely free and the atmosphere with everyone signing along was amazing. If you're going in the car arrive early and probably go for the park and float from Penryn, it gets packed but we wouldn't miss it for the world now.

Please don’t miss out St Michael’s Mount. It’s amazing - we went to Mt St Michel last summer in tribute!

Lots of good advice here.

Did anyone mention The Lost Gardens Of Heligan? That was our best day out on our gorgeous Cornish holiday this summer. 100% recommend!
