Hi folks, I will be at Ashton Gate as an away fan in the near future. Arriving by club coach so we’re normally 2-3 hours early. A leg stretch is always good after being on the coach. I’ve never been to Bristol, what’s the one thing I must see within 30/40 minute walk of the ground?

I’m thinking the Clifton Suspension Bridge maybe? Is it best seen from below/at a distance/crossing it? Quite happy to walk, admire something for 5 minutes and walk back 😁
Also open to other suggestions, thank you.

Ashton Gate is low down (river level) and the bridge, if you want to walk across it, is high at the top level of the gorge so it'd be a steep walk up in not much time!
there's a nice footpath along the river which goes underneath the bridge which I've got to say, I've never actually walked along but I always think I should when I'm driving along the portway.
if it's a sunny day, you could just walk up to the harbour side, it's gorgeous when the weather is nice.

It's uphill either side of the river to get to the Suspension Bridge. (The ground is at river level and the bridge is at the top of the cliffs that form the sides of the Gorge.). I don't know if you would have time to walk up and back before the match.

I would suggest a walk around the Floating Harbour taking in the SS Great Britain, The Matthew, The M Shed museum, Arnolfini Gallery, and Millennium Square . There's plenty of pubs and eateries on the harbourside. You may even see some of Banksy's work on your travels. There's also ferries that go up and down or cross the harbour.

@FetidMoppet @MrsMoastyToasty
thank you both for the prompt replies. Some great suggestions there that I’ll have a look at. For some reason I assumed the ground was higher up so thanks for pointing that out. Just wish we had longer to explore!

I agree with the walk above, at 40 mins from Ashton Gate you could just extend to The Old Duke jazz pub where there's often a band playing, and opposite The Llandoger Trow, a nice place to sit and appreciate Bristol vibes, you can be outside on a nice day. Open from midday I think.

The Cottage Inn and The Pump House pub are both on the waterside and have outside seating.

Often the away fans are brought to Portishead prior to the game (seem to have a deal with Wetherspoons) you can take a walk around the marina and even the nature reserve if enough time. Skip Wetherspoons and grab a drink by the lock gates, far nicer

The coach may bring you into the city along The Port way (A4) if you're coming in from the west off the M5. Its the road that runs below the Suspension Bridge.

@bristoli @MrsMoastyToasty @minnienono More options! Thanks all, will get planning.

I’d love that! I’ll keep my eyes peeled, thank you.

I used to live a 5 minute walk from Ashton Gate (and could hear it on match/concert days). You can get to M Shed / Cargo in 30 minutes and depending on route can walk past the SS Great Britain. All on Spike Island and along water much of the way both the Cut and the river. The chocolate path has reopened now too. The path as PP mentioned is easily accessible through Greville Smyth park, opposite the stadium. Agree also about the Cottage Inn. Tbh though Bedminster/Southville is lovely so I'd just stay in the neighbourhood.

@PurBal Thank you ☺️

If you have bad luck with the weather and want to cosy up nearby and eat/drink North Street is a short walk from the stadium and has a load of cafes, lounges and several nice restaurants to hang out in.
