Northumberland coast without car!

As the thread says, has anyone done this and is it worth doing?

Failing that may hire a car in the area.

Get the train/metro or fly into Newcastle airport and hire a car from there will probably give you the best option for rental companies.

Exactly what we did! Flew into Newcastle, hired a car and drove over to the Lake District for a few days, drove back and stayed in Northumberland for a couple of days. Dropped car off and flew back. Best trip ever!

I did train to Berwick and bus to Bamburgh. It was lovely and pretty easy.

And you have the satisfaction of knowing your holiday is greener and better for the environment than flying and using a car.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 06/03/2025 21:14

Nice place to cycle!

Whistledown2 · 06/03/2025 23:19

I think we will plump for public transport/walking and maybe even cycling which has been mentioned! Whatever happens it'll be an adventure. I just hope the weather (June) will be kind to us.

Thank you all once again, your valuable knowledge is much appreciated.

@Thoughtsonstuff sorry I missed your question. We are coming from the South, Essex to be precise. The plan is to go up by train. The itinerary is coastal paths and Holy island. It is a whistle stop break 3 nights.

I have no idea what to expect, but it'll be fun I hope, and we can always go back as I'm sure there is a lot we won't get to see/do!

I live there, and I would get a car to get round the best of it, there are buses, but they are infrequent.

Newtrix · 07/03/2025 17:37

I live there too and would definitely hire a car! Especially to get to Holy Island. Where abouts are you staying?

Whistledown2 · 07/03/2025 21:11

@Newtrix @TheM55 my partner and I have been thinking (and talking) about it today and will probably hire a car now basis this thread. We are staying at the Haggerston Castle caravan park.

Thank you both

Hope you have a nice time, I sometimes stay at Haggerston, there are tons of fabulous places, especially on the coast - another good area for a walk close to Haggerston (but again, would need to drive 10 mins to get there) is Ford and Etal, two castles, beautiful villages and lovely countryside. I like Berwick too. x

AelitaQueenofMars · 08/03/2025 18:24

All served by buses from Berwick! Ford and Etal are gorgeous villages.

Whistledown2 · 09/03/2025 14:48

@TheM55 so Haggerston is ok? It was so cheap I thought it must be dodgy! Thanks for the info once again.

@AelitaQueenofMars thanks so much for the bus advice.

I've now gone back to debating car/bus!

I think it depends what sort of mobile home you get. We got a silver 3 bedroom, two loos and decking, and it was about 15 minutes walk from the main site, but as a result it was in a lovely quiet area near a small lake and it was reasonably spaced from other vans, at a quiet time of year. It seemed new ish, it was spotlessly clean and comfortable, had dishwasher, proper american sized fridge freezer etc. and when something broke (hot water) they were out within the hour and had rang before that to let us know they were on it. As you get the cheaper ones, they may be in the busier /noisier areas and they seem closer together, and they might be older inside. The centre itself is a bit cheap and cheerful (except the drinks aren't lol) arcades, fast food etc. but generally full of people having a good time on their hols. The pool looked a bit limited but we didn't use it. Its got a little shop and that was OK. We were only using it as a base really. Might not suit everyone, but we liked it, and we've booked again.

It's right on the A1. It always looked a bit dodgy to me but I've only driven past it so take the opinion of someone who has actually stayed there. I'd suggest there are much nicer places to stay in Northumberland if you are coming such a long way but it depends what you are after.

AelitaQueenofMars · 09/03/2025 22:29

Don’t ask me how or why OP, but I managed to mix up Barmoor and Haggerston in my head! Both not far off the A1 but definitely not the same place 😬

Whistledown2 · 10/03/2025 18:56

@TheM55 if it works out ok I might choose a different caravan if I come again. It's cheap and cheerful and as long as it's clean that's all we need. It literally is just a base.

@AelitaQueenofMars I looked up Barmoor as you'd mentioned it..very posh!

@Thoughtsonstuff PP @TheM55 has stayed there, always good to get a personal recommendation I think. You never really know with TA reviews do you?!
