Backpacks for days out!

More experienced outdoor people than me.

I’m on the hunt for a new back pack for my days out with my family.

I currently have a Vans old skool back pack which is just one opening, no pockets inside and not big enough.

I would love a new black backpack that is the following

Waterproof
One or two external bottle holders on the side
Pockets inside
Not ugly haha
Large enough for food, jackets and other kid related bits (but not a huge camping backpack)

Can anyone recommend one?

Most backpacks are not waterproof. The most you get is water resistant. The expectation is you would put stuff that's needs to be kept dry in a plastic bag. Or buy a backpack cover.

If you're certain you want waterproof i would really recommend the Gourdon range from Alpkit. They're basically a drybag with straps. There's no pockets because sewing in pockets reduces the waterproofing. Some sizes do have water bottle pockets on the outside.

I got one a couple of years ago from Mountain Warehouse which is fabulous. Roomy main pocket, large front pocket with an internal zipped pocket and clip for keys, 2 bottle holders on outside and bungee straps on the outside which are good for putting jumpers or a coat in.
Its just plain bl
ack so wouldn't say its ugly but nothing to write home about. I'd go for functionality over looks to be honest.

If you want to try and get something nicer looking then I'd look at Osprey but they are expensive and often brighter colours.

Edited to add about the look.

For waterproof have a look at Stubble & Co.

Patagonia Blackhole.

It's an investment, but it will last you forever. If it doesn't they do repairs, I think for free.

Eastpak

I have a nine-year-old Eastpak backpack which I use daily, so I'm recommending them on the grounds of durability. Eastpak also make Jansport backpacks, I believe.

We have several Vaude bags in our house, I think 4 different sizes.

Osprey is also not bad.

But - be realistic how much you want to carry around. We found that two smaller bags are often better than one of use carrying the big one unless it's just one adult.

And we got DD to carry her own when she was 5. Nothing heavy but it's about the principle of sharing the load.
