UK road trip ideas

I’m currently bouncing between the idea of a package holiday in Europe or a road trip in the UK.

I’m planning on having two weeks at beginning of July and taking my 16yr old after her exams but before the school holidays start .

I was just wondering if anyone had done a UK road trip and how they found it, best places to add into the trip etc. A mix of landscapes, beaches and heritage. We would be starting from Suffolk.

Suffolk to Bath, then Cheddar gorge and Wookey Hole, Dartmoor, Eden Project and then finish at St Ives.
Back via Bodmin Moor and Stonehenge.

Driving in the uk is rarely enjoyable IME! It’s a means to getting from A to B and I definitely wouldn’t want to spend my entire holiday behind the wheel.

Ooh, I love a UK road trip.

From Suffolk, I'd go Norwich, Lincoln, York (all great city break places, with lots to see), then up to Northumberland for beaches and castles.

Come back slightly further west, via Yorkshire Dales, maybe Peak District, Leeds, maybe Birmingham, Cambridge....

That's probably too many stops, but adjust to suit. I do think, if you have two weeks, that it's nice to go a bit further afield.

I was going to say much the same as @CointreauVersial

Northumberland has a scenic coastal route, which is lovely.

A couple of years ago we did a Yorkshire road trip. OK started in Staffordshire to meet up with friends but then did the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, York, Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby, Masham, Hebden Bridge, Halifax (for the amazing Piece Hall) and finally Leeds.

The 24 Castles of North Wales. Some are ruins some are lived in.
Loads to see and do on route plenty of good beaches and food oppertunties.
I might have it as a word document.
From Suffolk head north toward Whitby then go Surfing at Saltburn.
All depends on what interests you?
Last summer we did it in reverse, Whitby for surfing then down the coast , Lincoln, Cambridge and Norfolk but had a family member unwell so didn't make it to our final destination Southwold.
We also did a Scotland road trip, Ayr, Lock Lomond ( In a £40 Aldi Canoe!) Isle of Arran which is spectacular, we try to add bucket list items to each trip, Deep fried Mars bar, Scottish island, Sail The Aldi Canoe etc.
We find you need to look for of the beaten track places the local go to.
Try to limit driving too

Pretty well exactly what I was going to suggest although I was going to throw in Winchester - so Stonehenge, stay overnight in Salisbury and lunch in Winchester then stay overnight in St Albans on the way back.

Other suggestion would be to go from Bath to Wells via Cheddar gorge and then take in the cathedral/bishops palace (you may see the swans ring the bell for food) then head to Wookey Hole for the afternoon. Stay in the area overnight and go to Glastonbury in the morning and then Street in the afternoon so your dd can get some retail therapy in Clark's village.

What about the cornish coast?

Use motorways and fast roads to get to Plymouth. Then Torpoint ferry across into Cornwall .....

Drive the coast road for Rame, Whitsand Bay and have 2 nights in Polperro (check they have parking). Check out the village there are lots of options to eat and if you like cold UK outdoor swimming look for Chapel Pool when tides out. Maybe walk coast path to Hannafore in Looe via Talland and catch bus back from Looe to Polperro.

Then research into visiting any of these as they will.depend on what you like to see and do.......

Fowey or Mevagissey, Eden Project (quite pricey) Falmouth, The Lizard, Isles of Scilly (won't be cheap), Porthcurno and the Minack (try and catch a performance), St Ives (could use train from St Erth), Camel Trail/Estuary, Porthleven or Mawgen Porth, Padstow.

Cornwall has a few Travelodges/Premier Inns inland which might be cheaper and easier to book for just a night or two. Then drive out to coastal places if you want to save a bob or two.

If you're driving through the Midlands/ east Wales and like old towns, you could do Ludlow, Shrewsbury and Chester. Also drive along the north
Wales coastline to Llandudno and back on the scenic route through Snowdownia.
