I've never been to Liverpool and am thinking of going for my birthday weekend. Ideally I would like 5 stars, a suite, spa, nice bar. I'm looking at the Municipal which seems to have what I want. Any other hotel recommendations?

No plans as yet but I want a bit of culture, shopping and nice food.

I'd love tips for what is not to be missed in Liverpool on a first trip, thank you.

The Hope Street Hotel is good, but I don't think it has a spa.
The Hilton is very central, and quite bling.

What to see depends on what interests you, but I would say the two cathedrals (and the surrounding area, known as the Georgian Quarter), Tate (currently relocated away from the Royal Albert Dock) and the Walker Art Gallery.

St George's Hall is interesting - there are guided tours.

Check the tides and go out of town to Anthony Gormley's Another Place (aka the Iron Men).

If you're interested in the Beatles, there are tours to take in both the Lennon and McCartney houses, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields etc.

Also out of the city centre, the Palm House in Sefton Park.

Just up the road in Prescot, Shakespeare North Playhouse, which is a replica of a 400 year old wooden cockpit theatre.

Too much for one weekend, but plenty to choose from!

And check the football fixtures for the weekends you might want, as that can push up hotel prices, and affect availability.

Thank you 🙏, just starting to look into it, appreciate there's a lot to see.

Hilton looks a bit too much like the places I stay in for work tbh, unless I'm looking at the wrong one.

I second the cathedrals, both are beautiful in different ways. It’s also worth the £7 to climb the tower.

Hope street hotel has a spa now !

thecrispfiend · 21/02/2025 18:46

Don't forget the ferry across the Mersey

Hope Street Hotel has a gorgeous rooftop spa. Definitely would choose there over The Municipal. Much better location and a much nicer hotel.

Foodwise :- Lunya, The Art School, London Carriage Works, The Quarter , Manifest and 8 by Andy Sheridan.

Make sure you book a table to eat out, especially Saturday night! Liverpool knows how to have a good time and nice places get full. Dp and I loved Salt House Tapas.

I 'enjoyed', if that's the word, the Slavery Museum and all the other museums in St George's Dock. The crypt exhibition about the building of St Patrick's Cathedral was riveting. We had drinks at the Philharmonic and just visited every art installation going.

St John's Beacon (Radio City tower) gives you a great view of the city.

We go regularly to Liverpool and always stay at Hope St Hotel. Wonderful staff , spa is great and it has a lovely bar.
We like eating on Lark Lane...short taxi ride away. The Bridewell pub is in old Victorian holding cells, Philharmonic well worth a visit.

Anglican cathedral

Liverpool is a very easy city to walk around, the centre is quite compact. The buildings themselves area beautiful so I would recommend a general wander around the Albert Dock then up into town, taking on Castle St, William Brown St and the surrounding area.

Lots of places to eat on Castle St, Bold St and a big food court on the top level of Liverpool One shopping centre with various cuisines.

whatonearthishappenin · 21/02/2025 19:16

I love the Municipal - the bar area is gorgeous.

Titanic is nice too but you couldn’t really walk into town.

I love Bacaro for a (slightly) more casual dinner. Nord, Wreck, 8 by Sheridan and the Art School all fancier.

Recommend going to the 360 Skybar particularly if you get good weather. Albert Schloss for a fun night and some live music.

People have already said the Cathedral and Docks. Also worth looking at what’s on at the theatres.

Enjoy - it’s a fabulous city!

Did the Lennon and McCartney houses in the summer. Really enjoyed them. I knew a fair amount about the Beatles, but you don't have to.

MammaTo · 21/02/2025 20:03

Liverpool gal here. Some of my favourite food places are Duke St Market, Polidor on Lark Lane followed by a walk round Sefton Park, Lunyalita on the Albert Dock, The Quarter which is by the cathedrals, Villa Romana is a cosy little Italian, Bacaro and Salt House Tapas too. Hope St Hotel has a gorgeous spa now, as does the Titanic (but this is set slightly outside the city centre) but the Municipal Hotel bar is just chefs kiss for me.

JaneAustensKitty · 21/02/2025 20:09

Thanks very much everyone! I'd looked at Hope St but am not a huge fan of the scandi/minimalist look generally and I preferred the look of the room at the Municipal. I'm thinking of booking the presidential suite and it looks gorgeous! I'll take another look.

Thanks re restaurant recommendations too. Lots to google.

Lark Lane is a short Taxi ride away plenty of eating places, Bold street walk up it to the bombed out church packed with eating places. La Parilla Mexican is very good
No its not for every one but the Speed boat trip around the docks is great and if you are up for it they take you to a part of the dock with no speed limit its fantastic
