Tube with kids

Hi

We’re visiting London later this week for the first time in years and the first time with kids. I have looked online and can’t get clear answers regarding using the tube with the kids. One is 7 - I believe he would be free, but how does he get through the barriers without buying a ticket? The other is 13 - i believe he can get discounted rates with an Oyster card. Can we just get him one at Euston? Online it wanted at least £20 loaded on and £5 postage. I don’t think we will be using the tube that much.

Thanks!

You take the 7 yr old with you through the extra wide gates meant for people who have luggage. I’m sure someone else will know the answer to your other question

Re the youngest, he just goes with you through the big barriers using your contact less card.

You can buy an oyster at the ticket office for the older one, but if he has access to another contact less card that would be easier and cheaper. You can't use the same card for two gates.

Although pp is right that a contactless would assume adult prices. I'd ask at the station, they're pretty helpful.

To be honest if it's just for the day and your 13 year old either has his own contactless card or you have a spare one he can use then use that and pay the adult fare.
To buy an Oyster you have to pay about £7. Then you have to top it up to pay for the journeys.
You can get it registered to be a "young persons" card to get cheaper fares but the Zone 1/2 adult daily price cap is £8.50.
The £7 for the Oyster plus whatever you need to top up will probably be more than £8.50 in total.
So just get him to use a contactless bank card.

I've always just told my teen to use their debit card/go henry and reimbursed them layer.

Thanks - that was going to be my next question! He has a GoHenry card. Glad he could use that

Thanks everyone. I will just top up his GoHenry!

One less thing to stress about now.

Yep. Go henry is contactless and therefore can be used on the tube.

7 year old goes just in front of you through luggage gate and if that isn't working I can get mine through a regular gate quickly.
